Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Defense leads PLNU to another dominant victory

SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma women's basketball team rolled to its 12th victory in its last 13 games with an 83-45 win over Notre Dame de Namur on Monday, Jan. 30.

Five Sea Lions (17-3, 11-2 PacWest) scored in double-figures as Point Loma led wire-to-wire. The win allowed them to hold onto third place in the PacWest standings. The loss dropped NDNU into fifth place in the PacWest standings at 7-6 (9-11 overall).

Sydney Tonack led all scorers with 16 points on 8-of-16 shooting. Roya Rustamzada again filled up the stat sheet with 14 points, eight rebounds, six assists and a steal. Alex Brunk chipped in with 15 points, eight boards and four assists. The Sea Lions also go a huge lift off their bench. Stephanie Williams came in and knocked down three 3-pointers en route to posting 13 points, and a game-high nine rebounds. Kassidy Gengenbacher added 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Anna Viettry also had four assists.

"From top to bottom we are very unselfish and you are starting to see that how the student-athletes have bought into being part of a great team, so it doesn't matter if you are a double-digit scorer or someone coming off the bench, you have to do your job and play your role," said Point Loma's first-year head coach Lisa Faulkner. "The kids coming off the bench are doing an awesome job. They are all playing hard and bringing energy, and it is really fun to be part of this team right now."

This was the Sea Lions' ninth straight victory when holding their opponents to 57 points or less. They lead the PacWest in scoring defense, allowing just 56.1 points per game. Tonight, they defense limited NDNU to just 27.3 percent shooting from the field, and just 4.2 percent from 3-point range (1-of-24). Point Loma also forced the Argonauts into 19 turnovers (white committing just 13) and outrebounded them by plus-9 (48-39).

"We put an emphasis on our defense all season and this team has really bought in to playing tough man-to-man defense," Faulkner explained. "I think we do a very good job taking away team strengths and individual strengths. Our philosophy is to make the other team take tough, contested shots and if they can make them we will clap our hands and run back down on offense."

Jerusha Paine was the only Argonaut in double-figures. She recorded 13 points and eight rebounds.

The Sea Lions' homestand will continue this Thursday and Saturday when they welcome in Chaminade and Hawaii Hilo, respectively.

"It is a crazy week and we have talked about being really disciplined in practice and making sure we get done everything we need in practice in an efficient amount of time so we can stay off our feet because we have four games in eight days," Faulkner said. "I trust this team a lot and I think we are really focused on getting better each day and it is starting to show out on the court."
