Rounding the corner into the final stretch of the season, the Point Loma women's soccer team have an important week ahead of them. The Sea Lions host Hawai'i Pacific this Monday (Oct. 16) at 1 p.m. and has the rest of the week to prepare for their match on Saturday (Oct. 21) at Dixie State. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.

A look at the Sea Lions
After the win over Chaminade, 3-0, on Monday (Oct. 9) and the win against Hawai'i Hilo last week, the women's soccer team is looking good going into this week's games. Â Point Loma is now (5-5-1, 4-3-0 PacWest) in sixth place, tied with Concordia (CA), in the PacWest standings with twelve points. The Sea Lions are going into this game with a four game winning streak at home.
After last week's games, Ashlee Watkins takes the lead for the Sea Lions in goals scored with three. Ashlee Smith, Abbey Teagle, and Watkins lead the team in total shots with 14. Watkins and Teagle connected on two goals in the first 13 minutes of the game on Monday against Chaminade. Jessica Taylor scored the third goal in the 42nd minute of the match with an assist by Abbi Swanson. Katie Freeberg netted her first goal of the season, in only her second game back from injury, for the win over Hawaii Hilo. Freshman goalkeeper Brianna Linnell has 36 saves on the year and has a goal against average of .96, she also is tied for first in the conference with total shutouts at five.
A look at the Sharks
Hawaii Pacific (6-6-1, 2-5-1 PacWest) sits at tenth place in the PacWest standings with seven points. Last week the Sharks dropped two matches, a 2-0 loss at fifth place Biola and a 2-1 loss to conference leader Azusa Pacific.
Ebony Madrid leads the team with six goals this season. She also leads the team in shots on goal with 17 bringing her shots on goal percentage to .680. She is fifth in the league in goals. Leonicia Lopez and Josefine Vonderburg lead the team in assists with two each, Lopez has also posted three goals this season. Goalie Lauren Spencer has 71 saves on the year and is second in the conference for saves per game at 6.43. Â
A look at the Trailblazers
After starting conference play 2-2-0, the Trailblazers are on a 3-game match winning streak with their most recent win a 5-0 thrashing of Academy of Art. They are currently tied for third place in the PacWest standing with 15 points. Their scheduled match against Holy Names was postponed due to effects of the wildfires raging in Northern California. The Trailblazers will have a chance to extend their win streak to four as they face Hawaii Hilo two days before Point Loma will travel to Utah.
Darian Murdock leads the team in goals with 15 goals and 3 assists for 33 points on the season. Those 15 goals lead the conference for total goals as well as goals per game, she is currently scoring at a 1.250 per game rate. With 35 shots on goal, that puts Murdock's shots on goal percentage at .574. Leading the team in assists is Tana Singley with nine along with two goals. Dixie State goalkeeper, Felicity Tarr, is tied for the conference shutout lead with Linnell, they have each posted five shutouts.
Next match
Point Loma will celebrate Senior Night at their last home game against Concordia on Thursday, Oct. 26, with play beginning at 1 p.m. Jessica Warner, Jennifer Ballez, Sami Swanson, Easton Kawawaki, Kaiti Freeberg, and Morgan Pearce will play their final match at the PLNUÂ soccer field. The Sea Lions also play at Biola on Sat. Oct. 28 at 4 p.m.
