Teagle to Watkins connection leads to victory

SAN DIEGO - Abbey Teagle connected with Ashlee Watkins twice in the first 13 minutes of the match to lead the Point Loma women's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Chaminade on Monday. (Oct. 9)

The first of Watkins' goals came in the seventh minute on a cross from the right side from Teagle. The second occurred just six minutes later on nearly an identical play to give PLNU a comfortable 2-0 lead. Jessica Taylor put the match out of reach with a goal in the 42nd minute off an assist from Abbi Swanson.

Team Records
PLNU (4-5-1, 3-3-0 PacWest), Chaminade (3-6-0, 2-4-0 PacWest)

PacWest Implications
The victory moves the Sea Lions up four spots into a tie for sixth place in the PacWest standings (nine points). They are tied with both Notre Dame de Namur and Dixie State. The loss drops Chaminade down a spot to 11th place.

The Turning Point
The second goal by Watkins put Point Loma up by two scores for just the second time this season. It also changed the way Chaminade would play the rest of the match as they were no longer able to focus just on defense.

Words from the Hall of Wisdom
On the Teagle and Watkins connection: "I love both those women. This team is young and the young players are good. I'm excited about now and the future. Abbey is turning into a big-time player. The whole batch of freshmen we are now starting to play and produce. I was really proud of both those women today."

On Teagle now starting: "Abbey is a really good player, but this game is very mental too. Last year she would start but she wouldn't be as focused as when she came off the bench. She was coming off the bench earlier in the season and doing fantastic, but we as coaches had a talk with her about needing to be mentally ready at the opening whistle. We gave her another chance to start because she wants to and deserves. She has embraced the role and has been stellar and one of our most consistent players this year."

On playing his bench: "No matter who we are playing we have to play a good level of soccer. I felt our women did a good job maintaining their level. Even when we started subbing I felt everyone came in and did a good job keeping that level of play high. That was the most important thing for me today."

On the shutout: "Any time you shut someone out, I don't care who they are, that is a positive for me. (The shutout) is a massive part of any result for me because the worse you can do is tie. The clean sheet was great."
