TURNOVERS TROUBLE SEA LIONS IN LOSS AT APU

SAN DIEGO – In their PacWest opener, the Sea Lions traveled to face the Cougars of Azusa Pacific, fellow preseason co-favorite to win the PacWest. Point Loma opened the game with a quick score from Sydney Peterson before a 10-0 run by the Cougars put the Sea Lions in an eight-point hole. PLNU would close the first quarter on an 11-5 to cut the APU lead to 15-13. Point Loma got out to a sloppy start in the second quarter where turnovers allowed the Cougars to push their lead to double digits. The Sea Lions closed the gap to five at the half, down 40-35.

The third quarter was the brightest spot for the Sea Lions as they held the Cougars to 14 total points with a solid ten minutes of defense. The Cougars were able to get three easy layups early in the fourth to regain some momentum, and the lead, before late free throws helped seal the 81-69 win. The Sea Lions had APU in foul trouble for most of the game but were unable to convert at the free throw line going 16-25 in the game.

Roya Rustamzada led the Sea Lions with 17 points scored to go along with eight rebounds and three steals. Alex Brunk and Sydney Peterson each scored 16 for Point Loma, while Tayla Hepburn added 10 points and nine rebounds.
