POMONA, Calif. - Point Loma got a clutch 3-run double by
Tyler Flores, a solid six innings from
Stephen Young and an outstanding seven-out save from
Eric Pierce to win the rubber match of the series against No. 18 Cal Poly Pomona, 6-2, on Monday, Feb. 13.
Â
The Sea Lions are now 4-3 on the season, with all seven games coming against California Collegiate Athletic Association opponents. The loss drops Cal Poly Pomona to 3-5.
Â
Young gave the Sea Lions the outing they had been looking for all series. The junior transfer bent but he did not break over his six innings of work. He allowed three hits and five walks (three strikeouts), but most importantly just two runs. He also gave PLNU a critical shutdown inning in the fourth which turned the tide of the game.
Â
Trailing 1-0 going into the inning,
Mike Gordner led off the frame with a solo home run to right and
Tyler Flores came around to score on an error, to give Point Loma its first lead since the middle of Saturday's game. Young then went out and battled through the bottom of the fourth, stranding three runners, to get the Sea Lions back in the dugout with the lead.
Â
After one out in the fifth, Point Loma put the next three runners on base to chase Broncos' pitcher from the game. Cal Poly Pomona called on Wyatt Shackleford out of the bullpen to face Flores, and on the very first pitch the junior outfielder saw, he hit a one-hopper against the right-center field wall to clear the bases. He would come in to score later in the inning on a two-out single by
Ryan Casper to extend the Sea Lions' lead to 6-1.
Â
Young would give up one run in the fifth and then set the Broncos down in order in the sixth, thanks to a double play. He would be pulled in the seventh and CPP would load the bases with one out. After
Cole Millerd recorded the second out with a strikeout, coach
Joe Schaefer went to his bullpen for the lefty
Eric Pierce. The senior proceeded to get a grounder to second to defuse the threat and retire the side. In the eighth Pierce shut the Broncos down 1-2-3 and after a leadoff walk in the ninth he struck out the side to record his second save of the series. He has not allowed a run over 7.1 innings pitched this year, and has 10 strikeouts.
Â
Flores finished the game 2-for-4 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored. He was the only Sea Lion to record a multi-hit game as PLNU was outhit in the contest 7-6. Chris Stratton was 3-for-5 out of his leadoff spot for CPP.
Â
Point Loma will prepare to face another CCAA opponent this weekend as it travels to Cal State Dominguez Hills for a four-game series beginning Thursday, Feb. 16.Â
