Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

#7 Sea Lions jump on top early to win 8th straight

HONOLULU - The No. 7 regionally ranked Point Loma women's basketball team held to just six points in the first and third quarters to earn a 68-44 road win at Chaminade on Saturday, Feb. 18.

This was the eighth consecutive win for Point Loma, elevating its record to 22-3 on the season. It remains in second place in the PacWest standings at 16-2. The loss was the sixth straight for Chaminade as it drops to 3-20 (3-16 PacWest).

Any thoughts of a 'letdown game' from their big win against No. 6 regionally ranked Hawaii Pacific on Thursday were quickly forgotten as Point Loma jumped out to a 27-6 lead after the first quarter. PLNU cruised from there, never letting its lead get below 14 points.

Roya Rustamzada scored a game-high 17 points and hauled in 10 rebounds to post her 12th double-double of the season. She was 6-of-10 from the field, and added three assists, two blocks and a steal. Riley Abraham scored 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting and grabbed six rebounds in 14 minutes. Sydney Tonack also posted 12 points, and Kassidy Gengenbacher chipped in with 11.

The Sea Lions controlled the pace contest all 40 minutes thanks to their ball control. PLNU had just eight turnovers in the game, and no more than two in any quarter, while CUH had 18 miscues leading to a Sea Lions' 25-6 advantage on points off turnovers. Point Loma also outscored Chaminade 11-0 in second chance points and assisted on 19 of its 25 made baskets.

Meanwhile, the Sea Lions' defense held Chaminade to 38.1 percent shooting and PLNU made more free throws (12) than the Silverswords attempted (10). Courtney Kaupu led CUH with 15 points. She was 4-of-6 from 3-point range. Lilia Maio also had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Point Loma will close out its Hawaii road trip against BYU-Hawaii on Monday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m.
