SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma baseball team dropped the second game of the series to Chico State, 6-3, on Friday, Feb. 3.
Â
San Diego native and No. 9 hitter Casey Henderson was a thorn in the side of the Sea Lions all game. He broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth with a run scoring double and then capped off the Wildcats' three-run seventh inning, which extended their lead to 6-2, with a two-run homer to center field. He finished the game 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and a run scored.
Â
Kellen Sheppard was the standout offensively for the Sea Lions as he went 3-for-4 with a double and two two-out RBIs. The first of his two RBI came in the fourth as PLNU scored twice to tie the game at 2-2.
Matt Jervis posted his second straight multi-hit game and is now 5-of-9 on the season.Â
Â
Cam Greenough (1-0) went five innings in the start for Chico State, allowing four hits and two runs to pick up the victory. Jae Wagner added his second save with a perfect ninth.
Kevin Lillicrop was saddled with the loss for Point Loma after giving up eight hits and six runs (all earned) over seven innings. He struck out four and walked none.
Â
Henderson was the only Wildcat to have a multi-hit game. However, five of Chico State's eight hits went for extra bases, including two home runs, while just one of PLNU's nine hits was for extra bases.
Â
"Chico State does a really good job of exploiting mistakes," said Point Loma head coach
Joe Schaefer. "They do a really good job on two-strike counts and they rely on two-out hits to score runs, and they do a very good job of it. We have to be consistent and not leave pitches over the plate because they will exploit it.
Â
"We also have to get leadoff outs," Schaefer said. "Their offense goes as their leadoff hitter goes, and if we can get those leadoff outs we can have some success on the mound."
Ryan Garcia's streak of reaching base safely in 69 straight games was also snapped as he went 0-for-4.Â
Â
PLNU and Chico State will close out their four-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 4 starting at 11 a.m.
Trevor Abshire will be on the mound for Point Loma in the first game, and
Stephen Young will make his debut in the finale.Â
