Comeback victory opens Cal Poly Pomona series

POMONA, Calif. - Mike Gordner's two-run double in the seventh inning sparked a Sea Lions' rally for an 8-6 comeback victory over No. 6 Cal Poly Pomona in the series opener on Thursday, Feb. 9.

After PLNU (3-2) jumped in front 3-0 in the second inning on an RBI by Ryan Casper and a two-run single by Adam Rios, CPP (2-4) would chip away at the lead, tying it up first in the third before going in front 5-4 with a two-run sixth inning.

Point Loma quickly answered with a three-run rally to retake the lead. Mike Gordner plated the first two runs of the frame as he doubled in Ryan Garcia and Micah Pries, before he scored an insurance-run on a throwing error by the catcher. Tyler Flores added a solo home run in the eighth to extend the lead to 8-5.

After Cole Millerd worked around some trouble in the eighth, which included giving up one run, Eric Pierce closed out the game for his first career save. He had two strike outs in the inning. Starter Kellen Sheppard (1-0) battled and earned the win. He went six innings allowing nine hits and five runs while striking out three and walking one. CPP's starter Jeff Bain also went six innings allowing five hits and four earned runs, while walking two and striking out two.

PLNU earned the win despite getting outhit 12-7. Kellen Sheppard went 2-for-4 with a double and was the only Sea Lion to record a multi-hit game. Daniel Pitts and Brennan McKenzie had three hits apiece for the Broncos.

The teams will continue their series at Point Loma on Saturday, Feb. 11 with a single 9-inning game. First pitch is set for Noon. The series will conclude on Monday, Feb. 13 at Cal Poly Pomona.
