SAN DIEGO -
Kellen Sheppard moved into a tie for fifth place in Point Loma baseball history with 22 career wins as he led the Sea Lions to a 2-1 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills in a non-conference contest on Wednesday, Mar. 15.
Â
This was the 12th straight win for PLNU which improved to 15-3 on the season (8-0 PacWest). The loss drops CSUDH to 5-17.
Â
Sheppard went seven innings allowing four hits and no walks while striking out eight. He did not allow a runner to get past second base and he had four perfect innings. This is the third straight start for Sheppard in which he has gone at least seven innings while allowing one run or less.
Â
"That is two starts in a row for him on short rest, and to get seven innings out of him was awesome and more than we expected," said Point Loma head coach
Joe Schaefer. "I was surprised how effective and efficient he was (on short rest), but that was a huge for our team."
Â
Sheppard also helped provide the offense as he went 2-for-4 and knocked in
Harrison Ramey for the first run of the game in the second inning.
Mike Gordner added an insurance run with a solo home run in the fourth. He finished the game 2-for-4 with a double and a home run. Ramey also recorded a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3.
Â
After Gordner's homer, PLNU cruised into the ninth inning before hitting their first speed bump of the day. The Toros strung together three straight hits off Sea Lions' closer
Eric Pierce to cut the lead to one (2-1) with two runners still in scoring position with one out. But Pierce struck out the next two batters to end the threat and record his PacWest-leading seventh save of the season.
Â
PLNU will not have any games this weekend but will welcome in Colorado Mesa (13-7) for a non-conference doubleheader on Monday, Mar. 20, starting at Noon.Â
