Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Strong defense & a little luck leads to victory

SAN DIEGO - Coach Wolf has talked about changing the culture of Point Loma men's soccer since arriving at PLNU six years ago. He has spoken of how his team needs to learn to win to really take the next step in the development of the program. Well just like Tom Brady, the Patriots and the Tuck Rule, coach Wolf and the Sea Lions won't turn away any luck that might come their way to helping establish that winning culture.

Tonight, it was the Sea Lions earning a huge 1-0 win on the road at Fresno Pacific thanks to a little luck from an own goal by the Sunbirds just after the half. The victory lifted the Sea Lions to their fifth straight win and into an early tie for first place in the PacWest Conference standings.

Point Loma (5-2-0, 2-0-0 PacWest), Fresno Pacific (2-5-0, 1-1-0 PacWest)

The Turning Point
Seventy-five seconds into the second half, Fresno Pacific's defender attempted to clear a shot by Point Loma's Jorge Navarro, but the defender knocked the ball into the net for the only score of the match.

Wolf's Words
"Grit is a great word to describe this group. It is a group that is finding ways to win. It wasn't easy tonight that is for sure, but at the end of the day it was a disciplined performance, and we kept a clean sheet and found a goal."

"Any good team is built on defending. Our guys are really going a good job and making it difficult on the other team. Fresno Pacific did have some good chances tonight. Wiktor (Lasota) pulled out an unbelievable save and they hit the post but there is always fortune that goes with that. At the end of the day any team that is worth its weight is going to defend really well and put up clean sheets because eventually you are going to have to win like that."

"This was a big ask by our scheduler to give us Azusa Pacific and Fresno Pacific to open the conference, especially to go on the road to Fresno after what was a very physically tough game against Azusa. It is amazing to come away with six points after these two matches. Hopefully we can keep it going and build on it."
