Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

TEAM DEFENSE LEADS PLNU TO 30-POINT WIN

HONOLULU, Hawaii – Coming off of a tough loss to one of the top teams in the conference, the Sea Lions came together for one of their best team performances of the season. The trip to Hawaii can be tough with the long travel times and adjusting to the time difference, but Point Loma came ready to compete. The team put together one of their best defensive performances holding the SilverSwords of Chaminade to only 52 total points on 25.7% shooting for the game. The teams got off to a slow and sloppy start with 10 total fouls in the first quarter alone, the teams also combined for 10 turnovers in the quarter.

The second quarter changed the game as the Sea Lions found their rhythm offensively and were able to push their lead to 13 over Chaminade heading into halftime. Point Loma used their tough half-court defense to force the Swords into tough shots and turnovers that the Sea Lions converted into 21 points. PLNU was also able to hold Chaminade to 1-of-21 from three-point range with the only basket coming with less than a minute left in the game.

While Point Loma had several players who made key contributions to the win it was the defensive energy and scoring off the bench from Carol Schroeder that changed the game. Schroeder scored 15 of her 21 points in the second half to help the Sea Lions maintain and extend their lead, she also grabbed seven rebounds including five on the offensive end. Roya Rustamzada added to her total number of double-doubles with 11 points and 10 rebounds, but she contributed in several other areas dishing out seven assists, and adding five steals.

PacWest Implications
The Swords have had a tough season and still have just one win in conference play. The Sea Lions needed this win if they have any hopes at sneaking into the postseason, now sitting at 6-7 they sit at seventh in the conference, just outside of the the spots that will qualify for the conference tournament.

The Turning Point
After a close first quarter the Sea Lions opened the second quarter on a 12-1 run to push their lead to 12. Point Loma outscored the Swords by 12 in the quarter and had a 13-point advantage going into halftime which would prove to be too much for Chaminade to overcome.

Thoughts from Coach Faulkner
On the great defensive effort: "We knew that if we could keep them in front of us our size would bother them. We did a great job contesting and rebounding."

On Schroeder's performance: "Carol came in and gave us great energy. She attacked the basket under control and was able to get to the offensive glass. I know she is someone we can rely on to give us great energy off the bench."

On maintaining this level of play: "Every game is important from here on out. We are going to continue to play great defense and that will help fuel our offense."
