Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

SEA LIONS STEP UP UNDER THE BRIGHT LIGHTS

SAN DIEGO - Delaney Peery, Taylor Simpkins and Julia Glaser all scored to help the Point Loma women's soccer team defeat Holy Names under the lights, 3-0, for its 10th straight victory. (Oct. 11)

The first goal of the match was a beautiful connection off a set piece. Abbi Swanson took the corner and sent the ball over the scrum to the far post and Glaser was able to jump over the defense and head it into the net for the goal in the second minute of play. It was her 10th goal of the season.

Peery would extend the Sea Lions' lead in the 35th minute. Abbey Teagle set up the play by beating her defender towards the end line before sending a perfect cross to Peery on the far side of the net. Peery just raised her knee and knocked the ball into the net to give PLNU a 2-0 at the half.

Taylor Simpkins put the match out of reach with her goal in the 78th minute. Ashlee Smith took the ball near the top of the box and found Simpkins on the run. She calmly collected the shot and beat the goalie to the far corner of the net for the score.

In the match, PLNU outshot Holy Names 21-7, including 7-2 in shots on goal. Both shots the Hawks did put on goal, PLNU's Emma Hinson was able to corral. She has allowed just one goal in the last 909 minutes. Nyah Summers had four saves for HNU.

Quotes from coach Kiely
On playing under the lights: "It was such a great experience. I want to thank the fans, the support staff, and everyone that made this possible. Our games are usually at rough times to get people there, but this is just a great opportunity to play in front of our peers, the faculty and the staff. It takes a lot of work to put this on, so I appreciate everyone who contributed."

On the team depth: "When we made changes tonight we did not drop off, and that is what we ask of every player. We ask for the level to stay the same, or even raise, and I thought everyone did that tonight."

On the defense: "Our backs and Emma Hinson had a solid night. That is an area we can continue to get better in, and they want to as well, but we are doing a good job in the back."

On the seniors: "This group took on a new coach and decided to buy-in. That was a big deal. They all continue to lead so well on the field and off of it. I appreciate them and am so thankful for them. I told them that I wanted this to be a special year for them, for all they have given to the program, and I want them to go out well. They have done what I have asked and they continue to lead day-in and day-out."

On areas of improvement: "We still need to improve our finishing. We are getting so many opportunities but we just haven't quite finished enough."
