SAN DIEGO – It was a defensive battle on Saturday night as Point Loma took on Sonoma State as part of the Homecoming festivities. Playing in a packed gym, the Sea Lions held the Seawolves to under 30 percent shooting in the first half and only 24 first-half points. The team combined for five blocks in the half while winning the rebounding battle 28-24, including a 14-8 advantage on the offensive boards.
The Sea Lions forced several early turnovers in the third quarter, helping them to an 10-0 run to begin the second half. It would be the Seawolves turn to go on a run as they put up the next 11 points taking a 37-36 lead late in the third quarter.
Yuendie Guridi would answer with a huge three at the end of the quarter to give the Sea Lions the 39-37 lead heading to the final quarter of play.
Sonoma State found their rhythm in the fourth quarter as they put up 22 points in the frame, while holding the Sea Lions to only 12 points. A three from
Cara Liggins cut the Seawolves lead to 54-51 with under a minute to play, but SSU hit their free throws down the stretch and Point Loma was unable to find a scoring opportunity late.
Cara Liggins led Point Loma with 14 points to go along with eight rebounds and three assists.
Yuendie Guridi put up seven points and grabbed a career-high nine rebounds, including three offensive boards.
Carol Schroeder put up eight for PLNU while grabbing a game-high 11 boards.

Turning Point
After the Sea Lions pushed their lead to 12 points in the third quarter, a quick layup and a forced turnover by SSU pushed the momentum in their favor as they went on an 11-3 run to close out the third quarter and continued their strong play to close out the game.
