SAN DIEGO -
Daulton Hommes scored 33 points in his Point Loma debut and the Sea Lions hit the century mark in a 100-75 opening day victory over Montana State Billings at the Sea Lion Tip-Off Classic. (Nov. 9)
Â
Hommes went 11-of-19 from the field and 7-of-12 from the 3-point line but it is was his first basket that has everyone talk. With PLNU struggling early, Hommes shot faked from the 3-point line, put the ball floor and took off just inside the free throw line to throw down a monstrous one-handed slam.
Â
That play energized the crowd and his teammates as the Sea Lions would go on a 23-13 run in the next few minutes to take a 43-41 lead into halftime. In the second half, it was all PLNU. The Sea Lions shot .655 percent from the field and outscored the Yellowjackets 57-34 to cruise to victory.
Â
In addition to Hommes, three other Sea Lions also reached double-figures in scoring.
Sterling Somers came off the bench with 16 points and
Preston Beverly had 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
Ziggy Satterthwaite added 10 points and a game-high seven rebounds.
Josh Rodriguez posted 11 assists to go along with his nine points. Tyler Green led MSU Billings with 19 points.
Â
As a team, Point Loma hit 15-of-27 shots from behind the arc and won the rebounding battle by six (32-26).
The win was also the 300thÂ
Ryan Looney's head coaching career. He had 97 wins at Eastern Oregon, 164 wins at Seattle Pacific and has 39 wins at PLNU.Â
