Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

ROAD SWEEP

PLNU opens PacWest season at 2-0 on the road

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – The Point Loma men's basketball team got a complete team effort on both ends of the court to walk away with a 90-65 win at Dominican on Saturday, Dec. 1.

Kaden Anderson scored a career-high 15 points to lead five Sea Lions in double figures. The freshman from Enumclaw, Wash., was 4-of-8 from the field and 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Fellow freshman Brock Mackenzie also posted a career-high with 13 points, which included hitting three 3-pointers. Daulton Hommes and Preston Beverly chipped in with 12 points apiece, and Tanner Nelson added 11. Cedric Thomas paced Dominican with 16 points, but also had six turnovers in the process.

The Sea Lions never trailed in the game. They hit a 10-0 run in the middle of the first half and led 47-32 at the break. In the second half, DUC cut Point Loma's lead to 13 (61-48) with 10:40 remaining, but a pair of free throws by Anderson and back-to-back layups by Beverly defused any thoughts of a comeback.

Point Loma finished the game shooting .574 percent from the field and .500 percent from behind the arc (11-of-22). This was the fourth time this season Point Loma has shot over .550 percent from the field.

Team Records
Point Loma (6-2, 2-0 PacWest), Dominican (4-3, 0-2 PacWest)

PacWest Implications
The Sea Lions are one of five teams that went 2-0 in the opening weekend of PacWest play. PLNU joins Chaminade, Biola, Concordia and Azusa Pacific atop the conference standings with two victories. Dominican was on the other side as they were one of the five teams to go winless.

The Turning Point
Despite leading throughout the game, the run by Dominican to cut it to 13 midway through the second half put the Sea Lions' lead on alert. After Beverly and Anderson put together the 6-0 spurt, PLNU extended it to a 17-7 run to stretch their lead from 13 points to 23 points with 4:48 remaining. Nelson hit 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to cap off the run and seal the game.

Words from coach Looney
On going 2-0 on road trip: "Any time you can sweep on the road it is special. We are pretty excited."

On the offense: "We had the most unselfish and most efficient offense performance that we have had all season. We made a big emphasis in our game preparation in regards to ball movement and ability to share the ball. Our guys responded the right way."

On Kaden Anderson's and Brock Mackenzie's performances: "Josh Rodriguez and Ziggy Satterthwaite both got in foul trouble so it was awesome to see Brock Mackenzie and Kaden Anderson step up when we needed them. They both had their best games of the year."

On shooting .574 percent from the field: "The shots were much more open shots than they were two nights ago."

On PLNU's defense: "We were happy with what we did on that end. They did shoot too high of a percentage, but I think we did a good job guarding the 3-point line and limiting their open looks."

On what he learned about his team on the road trip: "What I was most impressed with was our ability to adjust. We changed some things with one shoot-around and a practice before this game and our guys were mentally capable of making that change."

On next game against Biola: "We have to keep improving every day, but we also know Biola and its style is tough to play against. We need to make sure we are prepared."
