Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

SUNBIRDS EDGE SEA LIONS, 77-74

SAN DIEGO – Sydney Peterson led all scorers with 22 points and Cara Liggins came away with another double-double but it was not enough as the Sea Lions fell to Fresno Pacific on the road Monday afternoon. It was a fast-paced game with both teams applying pressure and looking to score early and often. The game had 10 ties and 11 lead changes as the teams battled for the advantage through each quarter.

Fresno Pacific found ways to score when it mattered giving themselves the momentum as they closed out each quarter well. Despite being down at the beginning of each quarter, the Sea Lions hit big shots and kept the Sunbirds from extending their lead. A big three from Peterson in the fourth quarter evened the game at 62 and helped continue a 10-2 run for PLNU to open the final frame. Grace Brady scored seven of her nine points in the fourth quarter alone, but it wouldn't be enough as FPU made plays to stay in the game. Down one point in the final seconds of the game, the Sea Lions had possession but a turnover led to free throws and the win for the Sunbirds as they improved to 4-1 in conference play.

Peterson was a machine on offense, scoring her 22 points on 50 percent shooting from the field, including 60 percent from three and a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line. Freshman, Haylee Saurette had one of the best outings of her young career scoring six points while bringing down a team-high 12 rebounds, five on the offensive end. Isabel Turk had a solid night off the bench as well scoring seven points to go along with five rebounds. Fresno Pacific's Bree Alvarez led their team with 21 points while Jessica Malazarte totaled 20 points on the night.

Faulkner's Thoughts
On the message at the half: "Our emphasis has been on defense and rebounding. We had a stretch where we had three or four turnovers that they scored on, and clearly we can't have those stretches in games. We also had a lot of deadball turnovers and that gave them their lead at the half, but it was still a close game. For the most part we did our job defensively and getting rebounds."

On what the team can take from this game: "For our players, they need to control the things that they are able to control. You need to be able to go finish layups and do your best defensively. For really long portions of games this season we have been able to control those things, but when we aren't it has cost us. Fresno is a good team and they had a couple of tough plays they were able to finish on down the stretch, and that's what games come down to."

On the opportunity to play another game before the break: "It's a great chance to play another CCAA team on the road and to get some good competition and not have quite as long of a break between games. Instead of going back and practicing we are actually competing in a game. I think that will be very good for us and the CCAA teams provide really good competition. I like that we are playing this game and that we get to focus on getting better the next couple of days. Hopefully we can get a win on the road and it builds us up going into the break."

News and Notes
> Saurette's 12 rebounds was a career-high, she had totaled only 17 rebounds on the season prior to this game.
> Grace Brady totaled three blocks on the night, which vaults her into the top-ten for all-time blocks in PacWest history.
> Liggins' double-double is her fourth on the season, and the first time in her career she has notched back-to-back double-doubles.
> The Sea Lions currently sit in sixth place in the PacWest standing with their 2-3 record.
