SAN DIEGO - Freshman
Garrett Irvin continues to impress on the mound. In just his third collegiate start, Irvin pitched a complete game, allowing seven hits and just one walk, while striking out 10 to allow the Point Loma baseball team to snap a four-game skid with a 6-2 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills. (Feb. 16)
Â
Irvin had all his pitches working for him on the mound as he kept the Toros off balance all game.
Wyatt Champlin gave PLNU and Irvin its first lead of the series when he smacked a two-run homer in the fourth inning. Point Loma would continue to add on as it scored in each of the next three innings. PLNU added single runs in the fifth on a
Micah Pries two-out double and in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Jarrett Lindsay, and two more in the seventh on RBI-extra base hits from Pries and
Travis Takata.
Â
Pries finished a home run short of the cycle. He went 3-for-4 with a double, triple, two RBI and a run scored. Champlin was 2-for-4 with a double, home run, two RBI and two runs scored.
Tyler Flores also had a multi-hit game, and like Pries, has now hit safely in all eight games this season.
Â
The lone blemish off Irvin was a two-run homer in the sixth by Dalton Duarte, his second of the series.

The Turning Point
Even with Irvin dealing on the mound, Point Loma was still struggling to get its offense going until
Wyatt Champlin blasted his two-run homer in the fourth. That shot brought all momentum into the Sea Lions' dugout, and they scored in each of the next three innings.

Schaefer speaks
On Irvin's performance: "He was outstanding. He consistently pounded the zone. He got a lot of swings and misses and bad contact. They ran into a few mistake pitches, but collectively he did a wonderful job. We were able to get nine innings from him because he was constantly pounding the zone and getting ahead in counts. That was a great start."
Â
On Champlin's home run: "That was a big at-bat in a big spot. We needed that spark. We just needed something to get on the board first after scuffling the past few games. That was a big swing and it got the offense going."
