SAN DIEGO - Point Loma hosted the Golden Eagles of Cal State LA on Friday afternoon with the Sea Lions coming away with a 7-2 victory. Ranked 15th in the nation to start the spring season, the Golden Eagles have struggled early and now sit 1-3 after the loss to the Sea Lions.
The match favored Cal State LA early as they took two of the doubles matches out of the gate. The No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams earned tough wins for CSLA. It was
Ellie Gamble and
Michelle Torres at the No. 3 doubles spot who earned a lone point for the Sea Lions out of doubles play.
Singles play saw a flip switch for Point Loma as they swept their matches. The Sea Lions saw strong play from their Nos. 4 through 6 players who all finished in dominating fashion.
Gabi Armas got her second opportunity of the season at the No. 6 position and earned a 6-0, 6-1 win.
Ellie Gamble and
Michelle Torres made quick work of their opponents as well playing as the No. 4 and 5, respectively. Torres was able to win 6-0, 6-2, and Gamble 6-1, 6-2. The competition in the top half of singles play was tighter but each Sea Lion player was able to come away with a victory without dropping a set.

Wheeler's Words
On facing a tough West Region team: "This is a team that, over my four years coaching here, I would say we have had epic battles with. It has usually been 5-4 or 4-5 coming down to the last single match. Cal State LA fights so well and our ladies today did a great job of matching and exceeding that fight."
On the flow of the match: "We started a little slow in doubles and they came out ready to fight. The great part though, is that we were able to put that behind us and head into singles ready to go. We were able to take all six singles matches without dropping a set, so I'm really proud of how the girls fought back."
On the depth of the team: "I think our depth is definitely a strength of our team. Even the players we don't have in the singles lineup right now are very good players who could also make an impact. A big momentum push for a team is being able to get a quick win and get off the court and we were able to do that today. Our four, five and six players were able to get those quick wins and provide a momentum boost for our one, two and three girls playing in tight matches."
