Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

SPRINTING TO VICTORY; PLNU OPENS ON 21-2 RUN

SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma men's basketball team scored the first 12 points of the game and led 21-2 with 10 minutes remaining in the first half en route to a 95-73 victory over Holy Names. (Feb. 7)

Point Loma scored on its first eight possessions to nearly bury the Hawks out the gate, and took a 43-19 lead into the locker room. In the second half, HNU found its offense to pull back within 17 points, but after the opening run the game was never much in doubt.

Sterling Somers led the Sea Lions effort on the glass as he recorded his first double-double of the season with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Of the 13 rebounds, six came on the offensive glass to help PLNU outscore Holy Names 22-8 on second chance points. Ziggy Satterthwaite paced the Sea Lions in scoring with 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting. Preston Beverly added 15 points and seven boards off the bench. Holy Names' Alonzo Taylor led all scorers with 22 points.

Point Loma (19-7, 13-4 PacWest), Holy Names (9-18, 5-11 PacWest)

PacWest Implications
The victory solidified Point Loma's third place position in the PacWest standings. The 13 wins for the Sea Lions are tied with Dixie State for the most in the league, however, Point Loma has two more losses than the first-place Trailblazers. The loss dropped HNU into 10th place.

The Turning Point
The opening 21-2 run put the game out of reach from the beginning. Holy Names never again brought the deficit below 17 points as PLNU cruised to the win.

Words from Coach Looney
On preparation for the game: "I was pleased with the way we started the game. I thought we had great energy defensively. All our players were dialed into the game plan and we got out to a quick start."

On team losing a little intensity in the second half: "I don't want to make any excuse for it; we went into the locker room at halftime and relaxed. If we want to be great, we can't do that. You have to play for a full 40 minutes. Credit goes to Holy Names for not giving up and playing really hard the second half. Unfortunately, we didn't match that."

On the offensive rebounds: "We just want to win the possession battle every time we play. We know that we are not a team that is going to turn people over a lot, so we want to do it with our effort on the offensive glass."

On remaining games on the schedule: "We are just trying to take it one game at a time. Right now all our focus is on winning at Biola next week."
