SAN DIEGO - The No. 24 Point Loma baseball team was done in by its own errors and two-out RBIs by Cal State Monterey Bay in a 13-6 loss in game 2 of the series. (Feb. 9)
Â
CSUMB jumped on Point Loma early with two runs in the first, and the Sea Lions could never generate any momentum. The Otters added four runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and one more in the sixth to go up 10-3. They scored in all but three innings during the contest, and eight of their 13 runs came with two outs.
Â
Leadoff man TJ Dove led the Otters by going 3-for-6 with a home run, two RBI and four runs scored. He combined with No. 2 and No. 3 hitters to go 9-for-18 with seven RBI and six runs scored.
Micah Pries recorded a multi-hit game for PLNU by going 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs batted in and two runs scored.
Â
Colton Fletcher (1-0) earned the victory and Greg Steinbeck got the save. Fletcher went five innings, allowing four hits and three runs while striking out three. He gave way to Steinbeck in sixth. Steinbeck went the rest of the way to earn his first save.
Robert Ortiz III (1-1) took the loss for Point Loma.

The Turning Point
The four-run fourth inning broke the game open. PLNU looked like it was going to escape with just one earned run allowed. But the Otters had back-to-back two-out hits, including a two-run homer by Jacob Tonascia to extend their lead from 3-0 to 6-0.

Schaefer speaks
On moving on to the next game: "We need to do a lot more in our preparation. We don't have time before tomorrow but we just play basic baseball. We can't make six errors and give up 17 hits and expect to win. We weren't ourselves today, and this was not our brand of baseball."
Â
On Cal State Monterey Bay: "They are a really good team and are playing very good right now. They punched us in the mouth and we have to respond and play the game we are capable of."
