SAN DIEGO - After an 11-day break from competition, the Sea Lions proved they haven't missed a beat since their last match. Coming off of back-to-back sweeps, Point Loma just missed a third consecutive sweep with an 8-1 win over the Mavericks of Colorado Mesa.
The Sea Lions got off to a great start with doubles play, earning their first point at No. 1 doubles where
Shelby Groeneveld and
Michelle Torres got an 8-2 victory. It was the first time the pair played together on the season.
Carolina Cuevas and
Gabi Armas continued their solid play at No. 2 doubles with an 8-5 win to give PLNU the 2-0 lead. After dropping the last doubles pairing, the Sea Lions took a 2-1 lead into singles play, where they have been dominant this season.
Since being put into the rotation for singles play, Armas has yet to drop a match going 9-0 and only dropping one set in that span. After
Taylor McGowan blanked her opponent, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6 singles, it was Armas who finished second to give PLNU a 4-1 lead. McGowan is now 5-0 in singles play as well as 2-0 in doubles play for the season.
Ellie Gamble would clinch the match for the Sea Lions at No. 3 singles earning a 6-1, 6-1 win over her opponent. The rest of the Point Loma lineup would dominant their singles matches as well, no Maverick player would take more than three games in a set.

Wheeler's Words
On the team's consistency over the past few weeks: "The women have also been playing great tennis the past few weeks regardless of their opponent. One of the hardest things to do is to play consistently well against different levels of players but the ladies have done this of late which has resulted in some dominant results."
On the two tough matches this weekend: "Friday the ladies have a great opportunity to host ARTU who is currently ranked top 10 in the nation. We have played them very close in the past few years and I anticipate another close battle. The following day will be a tough road match at CSLA which will be another tough test. The ladies had a strong win at home against CSLA in February, but playing on the road is always a challenge. The ladies will be ready for a battle."
