SEA LIONS OVERPOWER VULCANS, EARN 9-0 WIN

SAN DIEGO - Point Loma put together a solid performance in a match against the Vulcans of Hawaii Hilo today, coming away with a 9-0 sweep. The team dominated in doubles play to begin the match and continued with their solid play throughout singles. Nikki Newell earned two more wins today to move her record to 4-0 on the week. 

The pair of Newell and Ellie Gamble got things started for the Sea Lions as they took their doubles match 8-5 to put the first point on the board for PLNU. Groeneveld and Torres would take their match shortly after also with a score of 8-5. Carolina Cuevas and Gabi Armas finished out doubles play with an 8-6 victory to give the Sea Lions the big 3-0 advantage heading to singles play. 

Cuevas would get the quick win to begin singles play, 6-2, 6-1, giving the Sea Lions the 4-0 advantage and needing just one more win to secure the match. Taylor McGowan would give Point Loma their fifth win with a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles. Armas earned her team leading 13th win of the season at No. 3 singles blanking her opponent in the second set after a close first set, 7-6, 6-0. Newell, Gamble, and Michelle Torres would all see their matches go to three sets but each player stood tough to grab a win on their respective courts. The Sea Lions look to carry over their success from the last two matches when they head on the road to face UCSD next Thursday.

On the total team effort: "Today was a strong result for the women's team against a tough Hawaii Hilo team. There were multiple close matches where we did a great job of competing hard for every point which resulted in an impressive team sweep."

On Newell's performance over the last week: "Nikki had a strong week of tennis especially in her singles win over Concordia. Her consistency is level of play this week definitely set the tone and example for the other girls to follow."

> Torres has now won nine straight singles matches. 
> This is the sixth sweep the Sea Lions have had this season.
> This was Armas' first time this season playing at No. 3 singles.
> The team will play two ranked teams in their remaining three matches. 

Up Next
Point Loma will be back in action on Thursday when they head north to La Jolla to take on the 12th ranked Tirtons of UC San Diego.
