POINT LOMA UPSETS APU, WINS 5-4 ON SENIOR DAY

SAN DIEGO - The Sea Lions celebrated senior day in style as they upset the 11th ranked team in the country taking the match 5-4 over Azusa Pacific. When the teams met earlier in the season in Azusa, Point Loma came up just short falling to the Cougars 6-3, but PLNU was able to get sweet revenge with the big win on their home court. The team led 2-1 after doubles and were able to split singles play to earn their 17th win of the season.

Nikki Newell and Ellie Gamble would continue their great play since teaming up for doubles and easily took their double match, 8-4. Carolina Cuevas and Gabi Armas would also earn a win, 8-6, giving the Sea Lions a 2-0 lead. Shelby Groeneveld and Michelle Torres would have to face the top pair for the Cougars and despite leading 7-6 in the match, they were unable to secure the win to sweep doubles. Miclat and Ivankovic would storm back to take the match 8-7 in the tiebreak, giving APU their first point on the day.

The Cougars would even the match quickly in singles play as Toby Miclat, the eighth-ranked singles player in DII took her match 6-2, 6-2 to begin singles play. Azusa Pacific would get a win on court five as well to take the 3-2 lead with four matches left to play. Carolina Cuevas would even the match once again as she took her match over 20th-ranked Petra Ivanovich in dominating fashion, 6-0, 6-2. Shelby Groeneveld would give the Sea Lions the 4-3 lead with a win on court three and Michelle Torres was able to come away with the win to seal the match for the Sea Lions, 6-4, 6-3, on court six.
