SAN DIEGO – The No. 4 regionally ranked Point Loma baseball team won its 11th straight game with a 9-6 win over Fresno Pacific in the series opener. (Apr. 27)
Â
The Sea Lions overcame an early 1-0 deficit with a four-run, two-out rally in the first inning. FPU would add single runs each of the next three innings and tie the game at 4-4 in the fourth. The score did not stay that way long as Fresno Pacific finally chose to pitch to
Tyler Flores.
Â
After the Sunbirds had intentionally walk Flores in his first two at-bats, they elected to pitch to him with two runners on in the fourth inning, and Flores made them pay. After fouling off the first pitch, he launched the next pitch he saw over the right field wall for his 18th home run of the season and the 7-4 lead.
Â
Again, FPU had the answer. For the second time in the game Hunter Villanueva homered, and it cut the Sea Lions' lead to 7-6. The game would remain that way until
Colby Kaneshiro hit a two-run shot in the eighth for two more insurance runs.
Nicholas Cornelius would work a scoreless ninth to pick up the save.
Â
Kaneshiro led the Sea Lions' offense by going 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and three runs scored.
Tyler Flores reached base three times, including the three-run homer. He also scored twice and drove in three runs.
Adam Rios and
Adrian Collazo added multi-hit games for PLNU. Villanueva went 2-for-2 with three walks
Â
Game 2: The second game of the series has been delayed due to darkness in the 13th inning with the score tied at 5-5. The game will resume on Saturday (Apr. 28) at 11 a.m.
