Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

WIN AT DOMINICAN MOVES PLNU TO 2-0 IN PACWEST PLAY

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - The Point Loma women's soccer team fell behind 1-0 before roaring back with three unanswered goals to defeat Dominican 3-1, and improve to 2-0-0 in PacWest play.

Tanya Bills gave the Penguins the initial lead in the 18th minute. Rachel Carrell answered with the equalizer in the 30th minute. Lauren O'Malley found Abbey Teagle on the sideline drove to the endline and sent a perfect cross to Carrell for her team-leading third goal of the season.

The Sea Lions would take the momentum from that goal. They controlled the ball much of the first half, but the score remained knotted at 1-1 until the 60th minute. PLNU then broke through for two goals in 41 seconds. Hailey Clifford gave Point Loma its first lead of the game when she finished a corner kick from Abbi Swanson. Just moments later Sarah Steinhaus provided an insurance goal when she drove from midfield to the top of the 18-yard box and netted it into the corner of the goal to put the Sea Lions in front 3-1. The Penguins would have just one shot on goal in the final 30 minutes.

PacWest Implications
PLNU jumps to the top of the PacWest standings with six points. Only Point Loma, Azusa Pacific, and Holy Names have played two conference games this season. Dominican falls to 0-1 in the PacWest.

Words from Coach Kiely
On the win: "Overall I thought our ladies did well. To get two wins on the road is hard to do, and to do it when an opponent has extra rest and being down a goal is very hard to do. They faced all challenges really well."

On the comeback: "I was bummed when we went down a goal because I thought we were playing really well. I was proud of the resilience to come from behind and dominate a bit. There were two other really good looks (off the crossbar and just wide), so we felt very much in control of the match, which was really hard to do considering all the circumstances surrounding the match."

On the variety of goal scorers: "It felt very collective this weekend. It has been group defending and group attacking. It has been really fun to see people get on the stat sheet that needed the monkey off their back a little bit. It has all been really good work. They have all been composed and hungry around the box."

On opening PacWest play with two wins: "Obviously we have had a tough non-conference for a number of reasons, and it has been fun to hit the reset button with conference starting. And it is important to hit the reset button if you are struggling when conference starts. We have done a good job of that. The two wins we got on the road set us up in a good spot mentally heading into next week when we face a very good opponent in Azusa Pacific."
