LA MIRADA - The Point Loma men's soccer ended their regular season with a 4-3 loss at Biola on Wednesday, Nov. 13.
After suffering a tough loss to Concordia, the PLNU men's soccer team bounced back, and that they did. In the sixth minute of the game
Hunter Loomis netted the first Sea Lion goal after receiving a pass from Tim Siegfired from the right side of the box. After the goal, Biola got on the ball quickly and pushed the ball downfield. 26 seconds later the Eagles netted the equalizer to make it 1-1.
PLNU kept the offensive pressure up recording four more shots, all being on goal. The Sea Lions controlled the pace of the game getting great scoring chances throughout the first half. In the 31st minute of play
Jorge Navarro took a shot that was blocked by a defender. Fortunately, for the Sea Lions the shot would hit the defender's hand in the box and result in a PLNU penalty kick.
David Achaerandio would take the PK for Point Loma. Achaerandio stuttered up to the ball and shot to the lower right side of the goal, the keeper dove left and the ball snuck inside the far post. The Sea Lions would carry the 2-1 lead into halftime.
Coming out of halftime PLNU looked to keep the offensive pressure up.In the 57th minute of the game
Jorge Navarro and
Patrice Glaser both had great chances to extend the Sea Lion lead but could not convert. JD Gunn, the Biola keeper would have both shots. Navarro ripped another shot in the 61st minute but would see it sail wide right. After a few substitutions on both sides of the ball PLNU found the back of the net after
David Achaerandio received a pass from
Jorge Navarro that he would finish and extend the Sea Lion lead to 3-1.
Biola would not shy away knowing they had to start pressing the ball up the field. For the next 15 minutes Biola would find no rhythm against the PLNU defense. All that would change when the Eagles played a ball to the center of the box where Oscar Rubalcava would net the second Eagle goal of the night. Biola would keep the pressure on the Sea Lion defense. In the 83rd minute of the game after a foul by Biola, some extracurricular activity went on resulting in a Biola yellow card, and a Point Loma red card. For the remainder of the game PLNU was forced to play down a man. That is all Biola needed to to strike again. The Eagles would net the equalizer seconds after PLNU was shown a red.
At the end of regulation the teams remained tied 3-3. In the first overtime period
Hunter Loomis had a chance to score from point blank range but sent the shot wide right. After nearly ending the game Biola raced down the field, and shot the ball at the net.
Connor McEwen would make a great save after the ball deflected off a Biola attacker. The save went out of bounds resulting in an Eagle corner kick. On the ensuing corner a Biola player headed the ball from the near post to the far post that found the head of a Biola attacker and netted it. The Sea Lions would fall in their final regular season game 4-3.
