Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

KLUTCH KADEN!

Anderson's two late layups lift PLNU over CSU San Bernardino

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.Kaden Anderson hit the game-tying and go-ahead layups in the final 56 seconds to complete an 18-point comeback at Cal State San Bernardino as the Point Loma Loma men's basketball team won its road opener, 93-91, on Saturday, Nov. 16.

PLNU went down 34-16 midway through the first half and then began to chip away at the lead. The Sea Lions put together an 11-2 run to get the deficit back to single-digits and trailed just 53-47 at the half. They would tie the game at 57-57 early in the second half, but they could not grab the lead and CSUSB pushed their advantage up to 14 points (77-63) with 11:10 remaining.

Point Loma continued to grind and take advantage of its free throw opportunities to stay in the game. It cut the deficit down to four (86-82) on a pair of free throws by Darnell Robateau with 3:58 left and a 3-pointer by Brock Mackenzie with 1:34 remaining brought the lead down to two. After a defensive stop, Anderson was able to get the ball at the elbow and drive down the lane for the game-tying layup with 56 remaining.

On the ensuing possession, PLNU forced an early shot from the Coyotes, and the Sea Lions grabbed the rebound with a chance to win the game on the final shot. Robateau set up for the isolation and took the clock down to eight seconds. He went left with his dribble, but when he approached the 3-point line the ball slipped away. He quickly grabbed it as the defense scrambled. This allowed Anderson to cut backdoor down the middle of the key and Robateau found him on the bounce pass. Anderson collected the pass and powered up for the contested layup. He was fouled on the shot as the ball fell through the rim for the go-ahead basket. He would miss his free throw, but CSUSB was not even able to get a final shot away.

Anderson paced Point Loma with a career-high 27 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field and 10-of-13 at the free throw line. He also had seven rebounds. Sterling Somers scored 21 points, one short of his career-high while grabbing five rebounds and handing out three assists. Robateau went 10-of-11 from the free throw line en route to recording 16 points and six assists. Mackenzie added 19 points as he went 5-of-7 from behind the 3-point line. Jeremy Smith had 15 points and 13 assists to lead six Coyotes in double-figures.

Words from coach Logie
On Cal State San Bernardino: "They did a great job coming out of the gates at the beginning of the game and attacking. Credit to them for hitting us first and building up the lead."

On his team: "Our guys just hung in there and found ways to chip away at the lead. We were able to play the long-game and were able to win it down the stretch. We learned a lot today that we can grow from, but more than anything it is about staying the course and staying together."

On playing in a game like this: "I could not be more proud of our guys for the way they stuck together and hung in mentally. It is very difficult when you get behind early on the road to stay the course. We really had to find ways to change the course of the game and get stops to give ourselves a chance to creep back into it. Our guys just never quit believing, and it gave us an opportunity at the end."

On Anderson's play: "Kaden played very well and down the stretch we were able to get him in closeout situations. I thought Darnell's poise to stay with the action allowed to find Kaden on that pass, and Kaden made a big-time play. Those two have been playing really well for us, and we trust them down the stretch."

On upcoming game vs. UC San Diego: "This is a great opportunity to go on the road and play a really good team early in our process."
