LA JOLLA, Calif. - The No. 5 seeded Point Loma women's soccer team spotted No. 4 seed Cal Poly Pomona a lead in the third minute before putting up three unanswered goals to upset the Broncos, 3-1, in the first round of the NCAA West Regional. (Nov. 21)
Â
CPP scored the first goal of the match with 2:41 on the clock after a through-ball from Taylor Scott found Allyssa Larkin for the score. The early goal initially put Point Loma on its heels, but it made the adjustments and found the equalizer before halftime.
Â
In the 38th minute,
Rachel Carrell took a shot from the left wing, which was blocked out of bounds by the Broncos' goalkeeper. On the proceeding corner kick,
Abbi Swanson found Carrell at the near post, and she headed the ball in for the score.
Â
The match would remain tied at 1-1 until
Abbey Teagle was able to track down a ball deep in the corner in the 58th minute. The senior crossed the ball along the mouth of the goal, and
Hailey Clifford raced to the back pole and kneed the pass into the net for the go-ahead score.
Â
Julia Glaser would extend the lead to 3-1 with an insurance goal in the 68th minute. The two-time first team All-PacWest selection collected a loose ball about 28 yards from the goal. Her defender did not close out quick enough, and Glaser turned and fired an arching shot that snuck over the hands of the goalkeeper and under the crossbar for the score.
Â
The defense would hold CPP without a shot on goal the rest of the way to secure the Sea Lions' second regional win in as many years.
Emma Hinson finished with four saves, including two crucial ones early in the first half to keep the deficit at 1-0.
