SEA LIONS FALTER IN SINGLES, FALL 4-2 TO EAGLES
SAN DIEGO – Coming off of a four match winning streak, the Sea Lions faced a tough test against Concordia Irvine. The teams played two close matches last season with each team winning on their home court. Point Loma was able to get the crucial doubles point to start the match off with the momentum in their favor, but the Eagles took control in singles and won the match 4-2.
Thomas Dafcik and
Yuki Okamoto made quick work of their opponents in No. 1 doubles winning 6-2 to start doubles play. The Eagles earned the win at No. 3 doubles to even the score, making No. 2 doubles the deciding match.
Scott Wheeler and
Tim Soderman battled to a tiebreak match, where they dominated winning 7-1 to take the set and the doubles point for the Sea Lions.
With the big win at doubles, Point Loma seemed to have the momentum in their favor heading to singles play. While several of the Sea Lions got up early in their matches, the Eagles were able to find ways to win to get back into contention.
Mark Penner saw his first singles action of the season at No. 6 singles but dropped his match, 6-1, 6-2, as the Eagles earned their first point of the day. Okamoto fell shortly after as the Eagles took the 2-1 lead.
Scott Wheeler earned the lone singles point for PLNU as he won 7-5, 6-2, evening the score at 2-2. But it was the Eagles who would claim wins on courts three and five to secure the match.
