TITLE TOWN!

Point Loma wins 2019 PacWest Tournament title

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – The Point Loma men's basketball team completed its sweep of the PacWest regular season and postseason championships with a 67-58 victory over Concordia in the PacWest title game on Saturday, Mar. 9.

Daulton Hommes led the No. 1 seeded Sea Lions with 19 points, including 15 in the second half. He went 8-of-10 from the free throw line. Preston Beverly, the 2019 PacWest Championships Most Outstanding Player, added 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting to go along with seven rebounds and two blocks.

Neither team led by more than six points in the first 34 minutes of the game until Point Loma went on an 8-0 run that was sparked by lay-ups by Ziggy Satterthwaite and Sterling Somers gave the Sea Lions a 48-41 lead.

Concordia pulled back within one with three minutes left and a 3-pointer by Jamel White two minutes later for the Eagles made the Sea Lions' lead 58-55 with 1:23 left in the game. Point Loma ran an isolation play for Hommes on the baseline, and he drove into the paint to make a short jumper.

After Point Loma got a stop, Concordia decided not to foul, needing a stop of its own to stay in the game. The Sea Lions drained time off the shot clock before Somers drove down the left side of the lane and made the lay-up that secure the win in the championship game.

Satterthwaite finished the game with six points and 13 rebounds, while Josh Rodriguez had four points and six rebounds as he was named to the all-tournament team. Jamel White led Concordia's offense with 17 points, and Brian Chambers added 12 points in the second half.

Concordia won the first meeting between the tournament's top-2 seeds during the regular season, beating Point Loma in overtime to become the first PacWest team to beat Point Loma. The Sea Lions evened the season series at home in the regular-season finale before winning the rubber match in the PacWest Championships. Point Loma is now 4-3 in program history in the PacWest Tournament.
