LA JOLLA -
Hunter Loomis led the Point Loma men's soccer team to a victory with a game-winning goal in overtime as the Sea Lions went on the road and defeated UCSD 2-1 OT on Thursday, Sept. 19.
Point Loma was rewarded the opening kick off and applied pressure from the start.
David Achaerandio sent a shot to the middle of goal that was saved by the UCSD keeper. The Sea Lions were awarded a corner kick. On the ensuing corner a Triton defender incidentally headed it into the UCSD goal. The Sea Lions took the lead in the 4th minute of the game. As the half went on UCSD gained more and more momentum. The Sea Lions did a great job not allowing the momentum to swing fully in the Tritons' favor. The defense blocked shots and cleared it when they needed to hold onto the 1-0 lead going into halftime.
Coming out of halftime UCSD regained the momentum quickly having multiple scoring chances, but still the PLNU defense stood strong. The teams would swap possessions for most of the second half. In the 81st minute UCSD streaked down the field with the ball. The Tritons were aggressive and it paid off as they netted the equalizer. The Sea Lion defense did not fold and the offense tried pressing the ball up the field until the final minute. The teams would end regulation tied 1-1
The Sea Lions began with the kick off in the first overtime period. Both teams traded possessions but could not get any flow on the offensive side. Neither team scored in the first overtime. As the second overtime started UCSD came out pressing and eventually turned an offensive possession into a free kick just outside the box. Off the free kick was shot,
Connor McEwen made a spectacular save to preserve the 1-1 tie. That is all the attack needed to see to get it going. On the next possession the Sea Lions took the ball down field but stalled when the ball was being batted around in the air. Finally the ball came down just outside the box where
Hunter Loomis and UCSD keeper met. The ball took a friendly Sea Lion bounce and Loomis netted the game winner in the 102nd minute.

Wolf's Words
On the aggressive start: "We came to press them. I thought we were really bright in the beginning. We caused them some trouble and we could have had a couple more chances. Goals change games."
On defense staying strong: "The guys did really well, and they battle. I thought
Jacob Moreno had a great game, I thought several of the guys did. Connor also made a couple big saves for us."
On the importance of this win: "It is obviously a big win for us coming off the Azusa game, that was a bit disappointing. To be able to go at UCSD at their place it is a pretty big deal."
