PLNU KNOCKS OFF SPU TO GO 3-1 AT SEASIDE INVITE

SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma women's volleyball team completed the 2019 Seaside Invitational with a four-set victory over Seattle Pacific to close out the tournament with a 3-1 record.

Jaime Cymbaluk led three Sea Lions in double-figures with 13 kills, while posting an impressive .440 hitting percentage. Fellow junior Madie Fox's numbers were even more incredible as she registered a .579 hitting percentage and 12 kills on just 19 swings. Freshman Grace Hicks added a career-high 11 kills. Cara Keturakis registered six blocks, three service aces, and four kills to go along with her match-high 34 assists.

After splitting the first two sets, PLNU found itself down 9-5 in the third. SPU had all the momentum but coach Scott elected not to take a timeout, and his team responded. PLNU went on a 6-0 run and never lost the lead the rest of the match. They closed out the third set on a 20-8 run and opened up the fourth set with a 10-3 advantage, and the Falcons never got in the match.

Scott's Thoughts
On bouncing back from losing earlier in the day: "We really really quickly tried to get the women to just let that match go. We have a good amount of experience on this team, and on the floor, but we also have a bunch of youth. Sometimes they just don't know what to do sometimes, and it would have been pointless to ponder on a loss like that."

On the aspects that impressed him this weekend: "I was impressed with the overall offensive efficiency from the outside hitters. Cara continues to blow me away every year with her leadership and how good she is at playing the setter position. Courtney was good last year, but now she is elite in the libero position."

On the three wins over the West Region: "Fortunately for us our loss was against a non-region opponent. It will hurt us in overall record but not in many of the factors to determine postseason bids. To go 3-0 against the West Region is huge. Not a lot of teams will be able to say that this weekend."

On the D2 West Region Showcase next weekend at CSU San Bernardino: "We have a lot to work on, but we know exactly where we are headed. We are further along than I expected us to be at this point, so that is a huge positive. I also believe our Showcase is the most difficult one, which is what we want. So let's go!"
