SAN DIEGO – The Point Loma baseball team was able to salvage their three-game series with a walk-off victory over Montana State Billings on Saturday, Feb. 1 by a score of 6-5.
After sweeping yesterday's doubleheader Montana State Billings kept momentum on their side when by two solo home runs in the second and third inning to give the Yellowjackets an early lead.
Garkow would not allow any runs in the top of the fourth and give Point Loma some momentum. In the bottom of the fourth Jarrett Lindsay would lead the inning off with a walk.
Otto Kemp then followed the walk with a single to left-center. That brought up
Baxter Halligan. Halligan would square a ball up but was hit right to the shortstop who stepped on second and threw to first to complete the double play. Fortunately for the Sea Lions, the MSU Billings pitcher would skip a fastball to the backstop where Lindsay came home to score and cut into the deficit. After four innings Point Loma trailed 2-1.
Garkow would send the Yellowjackets down in order in the fifth. Point Loma would grind for one more run in the fifth to tie the game on a
Travis Takata RBI groundout to the second baseman. Garkow would see his day end after 5.1 innings pitched striking out five and only allowing two runs. The Sea Lions would tag another one on in the sixth on a
Brett O'Toole sacrifice fly to left field that scored Halligan, giving the Sea Lions their first lead of the game.
Just when Point Loma had most of the momentum the Yellowjackets came right back and scored two more runs in the top half of the seventh to regain the lead 4-3. Once again PLNU showed great competitiveness and scrapped to tie the game in their half of the seventh. Alvarez would begin the inning with a walk, and then immediately stole second. He would advance to third when Takata grounded out to the first baseman. Jarrett Lindsay would come through in a crucial situation when he hit a sac fly to left field and Alvarez would score the tying run.
The game would stay tied through nine innings and would go into extras. In the top of the tenth, the Yellowjackets would push ahead 5-4 from a solo home run by Sam Powers. PLNU would come up in the bottom of the tenth looking for something to go their way. On the fifth pitch of the inning, Kemp would get a pitch he liked and would send it flying over the left-center field fence to tie the game 5-5. After Halligan made the first out of the inning Watermand would step in. On a 3-0 count Waterman would be plunked in the head, taking him out of the game.
Seth Ryberg would come into pinch run. The next two batters would also be hit by pitches which loaded the bases for the Sea Lions. After the Yellowjackets retired Cazares, Alvarez would step up looking to be the hero. Alvarez would work the count full before taking a ball high for ball four and securing the victory for Point Loma.
The Sea Lions would capture their first win of the season on a walk-off walk by
Izayah Alvarez.
Baxter Halligan got the win in relief, his first win of the season.
