PLNU PICKS UP BIG REGIONAL WIN

POMONA, Calif. – The Point Loma baseball team got a huge regional victory over Cal Poly Pomona on Wednesday, Feb. 26, defeating the Broncos 6-3. Coming into the week PLNU was ranked eighth in the West Region while Cal Poly Pomona was ranked 10th.

The Sea Lions got the scoring started in the top of the third inning after Justin Ledgerwood led off with a single. Izayah Alvarez stepped to the plate and squared to bunt to move Ledgerwood over to second base. He got the bunt down but the Mustang third basemen would throw it away allowing Ledgerwood to score and Alvarez to move up to second. Otto Kemp then doubled in Alvarez to put the Sea Lions up 2-0 early in the game. Two of the next three hitters would hit the ball hard but would, unfortunately, find a fielder.

Point Loma was able to tag on another run in fourth. Scott Anderson led off the inning with a walk and Easton Waterman would get a sacrifice bunt down to advance him to second. Brett O'Toole then delivered a crucial hit up the middle to score Anderson and extend the PLNU lead to 3-0. Pomona got on the board in the fourth as well. After two singles the Sea Lions would record the first out of the inning on a fielder's choice that got the runner out at second. On the first pitch of the new batter, the Bronco base runner at first stole. Jarrett Lindsay would throw down where the throw was cut off by Kemp who threw home after seeing the runner at third base take off. The throw would be late and Pomona cut into the Sea Lion lead making it 3-1. Jerry Quemada limited the damage and got out of the inning without allowing another run.

Pomona scratched another run across in the sixth making it a 3-2 ball game. In the seventh, the Broncos tied the game scoring a run on two hits in the inning. Point Loma got runners on in the seventh and eighth but was unable to get a critical hit when needed. With one out in the eighth CPP looked to strike again after back-to-back singles and a walk. Head Coach Justin James brought Zack Noll in relief to halt the momentum. Noll struck out the first hitter and got the second hitter to bounce into a fielder's choice to end the inning.

The Sea Lions got the hit they needed in the ninth. After Izayah Alvarez and Baxter Halligan each singled Jarrett Lindsay delivered with the biggest hit of the game, singling to left field which scored Alvarez. Point Loma took the lead 4-3. Scott Anderson added on two more runs when he ripped a ball to the left-center field gap scoring two. Point Loma was unable to add any more runs in the inning and went to the bottom of the ninth leading 6-3.

Zack Noll would make quick work of the Bronco hitters sitting them down in order and preserving the Sea Lion victory while picking up his first save of the season.
