SEA LIONS SAVE THEIR BEST FOR LAST

CARSON, Calif. – Point Loma saved their best baseball for the last inning in both games today. They defeated Dominguez Hills 7-6 and 4-3 in today's doubleheader. Brett O'Toole and Nick Cornelius came up in the clutch to help lift PLNU to a sweep this weekend.

Game One
Point Loma got out to a quick start loading the bases in the first inning, unfortunately, they were unable to push a run across. Dominguez Hills used that as momentum and scratched a run across in the bottom of the first inning. After retiring the first batter, the next two Toros each reached base on a walk and a double to right-center. Nathan Garkow would do a good job to limit the Toros to just one run.

Until the fifth, the run in the first was the only score of the game. With two outs and one Sea Lion on, Travis Takata stepped to the plate. On the first pitch, he saw Takata sent a ball over the centerfield fence to give the Sea Lions a 2-1 lead. In the bottom half of the fifth inning, Cal State Dominguez Hills responded with a home run of their own. After the first hitter fouled out to Ricardo Yoquigua, the next two hitters reached base on back-to-back singles. Pierson Loska of Dominguez Hills stepped in and hit the first pitch he saw over the left-center field fence to give the Toros a 4-2 lead. The Sea Lions got out of the inning without allowing any more runs.

PLNU would show tremendous fight in the sixth when they retook the lead 5-4. Baxter Halligan led the inning off with a double, followed by a Brett O'Toole single to score Halligan. The next two Sea Lion hitters hit into outs, but the Sea Lions put together a two-out rally to take the lead. Yoquigua walked and Ryan Park would get hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs and the top of the order up. Izayah Alvarez delivered with a single up the middle bringing home two runs to retake the lead 5-4. Dominguez Hills tied the game up at 5-5 in the bottom half of the sixth on a two-out, full-count, RBI single.

In the eighth inning, the Sea Lions looked like they would break the tie when they got the first two hitters of the inning on base. Ryan Park showed bunt and got it down, moving the runners up 90 feet to second and third. Alvarez stepped to the plate looking to repeat what he did in his last at-bat. Unfortunately, he would ground out to the shortstop, with the infield playing in the runners could not advance. CSUDH elected to intentionally walk Takata, which brought up the ever-dangerous Otto Kemp. On the first pitch, Kemp sent a fly ball to right field that would be caught, leaving the runners stranded. The Toros used that momentum and put up a run in the eighth to regain the lead 6-5.

Point Loma battled back and eventually took the lead in the ninth. Halligan led off the inning with a double and would advance to third on a wild pitch. Brett O'Toole came up big again sending his second home run of the season over the left-field fence giving the Sea Lions a 7-6 lead.

Andrew Amato limited CSUDH to one run over his three and a third inning of work and picked up his first win of the season. Jacob Pardine would get tagged with the loss.

Game Two
The Sea Lions made sure the bats would stay hot to start the second game. The first two Sea Lions were retired before, Otto Kemp walked to start the two-out rally. Baxter Halligan would then double, which brought home Otto Kemp. Brett O'Toole extended the inning even more with a double of his own bringing in Halligan and pushing the PLNU lead up to 2-0. Dominguez Hills would get a two-out home run in their half of the first to cut the Sea Lion lead in half.

The Toros would get two more runs in the second on three hits (two singles, one double) to take the lead 3-2.

Both pitchers settled in and did not allow a run through the next three innings. In the top of the sixth Halligan singled in Otto Kemp after he led off the inning with a ground-rule double. Halligan would move up to second on a wild pitch with Brett O'Toole at the plate. After back-to-back strikeouts by the Sea Lions, Scott Anderson came through in the clutch to give the Sea Lions the lead. With a single though the left side, Halligan would score giving the Sea Lions a 4-3 lead in the sixth inning.

Point Loma would take their lead into the bottom of the seventh. Matthew Schlesener took the bump looking to record his first save of the season. After the first three Toro hitters reached base Justin James would make a call to the bullpen. Nicholas Cornelius game in and would shut the door. With the bases loaded and no outs, Cornelius got the next two Toro hitters to strikeout. The final batter popped out to seal the Sea Lion victory and sweep over Dominguez Hills.

Joey Becher came on in relief and was credited with the win. Nick Cornelius recorded the save and the loss went to Isaac Mullins.
