SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Point Loma women's tennis team will return home happy after going a perfect 3-0 on their Bay Area road trip after defeating Academy of Art 4-3.
After winning their first two matches on their road trip Point Loma would keep a good week going.
Samantha Neilson and
Angelique Friedrich got the Sea Lions a quick doubles win defeating their opponents in the No. 3 position 6-1. The next match would go to the Urban Knights but PLNU would bounce back as
Ellie Gamble and
Rachel Whittington gutted out a 7-6 victory in the No. 1 position to give Point Loma a 1-0 lead going into singles play.
Singles play did not start how the Sea Lions had hoped as they fell in the first match and the score would be knotted up at 1-1. PLNU would not let the momentum shift as
Gabi Armas and
Taylor McGowan won their respective matches to give Point Loma a 3-1 lead. With a two-point lead Academy of Art would not give in easily.
The next two matches would go in the Urban Knights favor and the match was now tied 3-3. On the same day she was named the PacWest Player of the Week,
Angelique Friedrich would play the hero. After dropping the first set in singles play, Friedrich came from behind to win the next two sets to send Point Loma home victorious.
On Angelique Friedrich's play the last week and half: "She has had really big wins for us the last week and half and has played a lot of tough matches and opponents in the process of doing so. Today was a good example of that. She got down early in the first set but battled back and got a huge point for us to win the match today. She has done a really great job of staying confident even when she gets down."
On the women playing to their strengths: "I believe this week was a great week for us not just because of the results. The women really found an idea of what type of player they are and how to play to their strengths. There were multiple matches both against Sonoma on Saturday and Academy of Art today where we had to battle back from and the ladies did a really great job of staying within themselves."
On getting ready to host Concordia: "The one thing we can be just a little better in is closing out those close individual sets and maintaining confidence through some adversity. Especially in conference we will have a ton of close matches and we cannot get too high or too low."
