OAKLAND, Calif. – The Point Loma men's tennis team swept their two-game road trip after a hard-fought 4-3 win over Holy Names on Monday, March 9.
Yuki Okamoto and
Tyler Davis opened the day with a quick 6-3 doubles play victory over their opponents. Alejandro Casteneda and
Jan Plueer would fight hard but fall 3-6 in their doubles play match. The Sea Lions would cheer on
Tim Soderman and
Jasdeep Paintal who were playing in the No. 3 position in hopes of gaining the doubles play point. Soderman and Paintal would feed off the energy and gather the point as they defeated their opponent 6-4. As the team headed to singles play PLNU would have the lead 1-0.
Jan Plueer who was playing in the No. 4 position gathered the second Sea Lion point defeating his opponent in 6-4 and 6-3. The Hawks would storm back to tie the game 2-2 after
Yuki Okamoto and
Jasdeep Paintal each dropped their set.
Tyler Davis would give PLNU the momentum they needed gathering the third point after defeating his opponent 6-3 and 7-6.
With two matches still being played the Sea Lions needed just one more point to secure the victory.
David Strassburger came up clutch, after losing his first set he would win the final two of his match and gain the fourth point needed for a victory. Holy Names would gain one more point after
Tim Soderman fell in the No. 3 position. It would be too little too late though as PLNU walked off with a 4-3 victory.
Words from Wheeler
Thoughts on the match: "Today was a battle all the way around. Getting the early doubles point was crucial for us. Our guys came out and did a good job of battling all the through. Once we got to singles play, a lot of the matches could have gone either way but our guys did a good job of playing tough and getting those wins. David had a big come from behind win to clinch it for us."
On winning close matches: "Especially in conference play against tough opponents those are always crucial to win. We had a lot of close matches on our trip, the last two at Sonoma State and all of singles play today, we have done a better job of getting those points out of the close matches."
Regrouping and preparing for Tufts: "It was definitely a great trip for the guys, and a great way to end the first segment of our season. These next eight days the guys can relax both mentally and physically, but they are also excited and hungry to keep this win streak going and to play at home back in San Diego."
