SCHMIDT STRIKES GOLD AT THE END OF THE RAINBOW

WAIPAHU, Hawaii---Despite dominating possession and creating a seemingly endless amount of opportunities, the Point Loma Sea Lions (10-0-1 overall, 6-0-0 PacWest) needed a golden goal from Abby Schmidt to beat the Hawaii Pacific Sharks (2-8-1 overall, 1-3-1 PacWest) 2-1 in overtime Friday afternoon.

Point Loma outshot Hawaii Pacific 32-2 and drew 10 corners to HPU's 1, but found themselves fighting beyond the 90 minutes less than a day after traveling to the islands.

"We thought we got into really good spots," Point Loma Head Coach Kristi Kiely said. "We just needed to finish better. I'm really proud of the group for fighting through it. We just needed to be better in those spots and I know we will get better at it."

The Sea Lions were the aggressors through the match, but particularly in the first twenty minutes as they registered a handful of shots, with Schmidt taking four of them. Schmidt put a pair of those shots on goal, each of which were saved by the Shark's keeper Marisa Froio.

Point Loma added nine more shots before half and outshot Hawaii Pacific 14-1. The one shot was saved by PLNU keeper Emma Hinson a few minutes before the half.

The Sea Lions continued the all-out attack in the early portion of the second half, drawing a corner in the 50th minute. The long service veered toward the back post with Hailey Clifford heading back to the middle of the goal and Lauren O'Malley powering a header in to push Point Loma into the lead.

Point Loma only enjoyed the lead for ten minutes before Hawaii Pacific created a corner of their own, the first of the match, with Kaylee Sumida immediately cashing it in to tie the match at a goal apiece.

That made for what was just the second, and final, shot of the match for HPU as the Sea Lions continued to dominate possession and peppered the goal off of seemingly endless chances.

"We did a really good job controlling the tempo." Kiely remarked.  "Some of the best chances we've created were early and just didn't go in. Credit to HPU, they made it really difficult. They have some really good players that we had to work defensively and we had to work getting to the goal."

Nine different Sea Lions took multiple shots with Schmidt and Alison Pepper launching multiple shots on goal.

Schmidt continued to stay active and keep up the pace as she led the match with 10 shots, seven of which were on goal.

Still, it came to 1-1 tie into overtime before Makenna Herrero slipped a ball through to Schmidt who struck the ball from just outside the 18', skipping towards goal and skimming the keeper to break the tie and keep Point Loma undefeated on the season.

"I feel really proud of this group. Its a hard thing for all sides to do." Kiely said of her team's response to the travel. "You fly in, you play the next day and you have to be ready. I'm really proud of the girls for showing up the way they did and putting in the performance they did. Its just the one area that we need to clean up."

Point Loma will have two days off from matches to train in preparation of their matches Monday against Chaminade at 1:00pm PT.
