HILO, Hawai'i---After an incredible 34 match unbeaten streak in PacWest play, dating back to 2017, the Point Loma Sea Lions (11-1-1 overall, 7-1-0 PacWest) were upended 1-0 in overtime by the Hawai'i Hilo Vulcans (10-3-0 overall, 7-1-0 PacWest) Wednesday afternoon.
The daunting road trip finally proved too tiresome against a fearsome opponent.
Point Loma were actually the ones on their heels at the beginning of the match, with keeper
Emma Hinson pressed into action early.
"We had to weather the storm early." Point Loma Head Coach
Kristi Kiely said. "They had a lot of excitement and we were finding our way. We did and did fairly well. We had our chances in the first half and just couldn't capitalize on them."
Hinson was more than up to the task with three saves collecting all of the Vulcan's shots on goal.
Point Loma found their attack in the second half but Hilo keeper Viviana Poli returned the favor by stopping all three of the Sea Lion's shots.
"In the second half, we played better." Kiely said. "But I don't think we ever fully found our rhythm. Probably for a number of reasons but that made it difficult. We did have better chances. The corners were a big part of that and we were getting in their space a lot. But again, we couldn't capitalize. Hilo was hungry and sharp."
With the teams deadlocked at zero through regulation, Hilo broke through in the 97
th minute to put an end to Point Loma's perfect start.
Still, it's a remarkable start to the season, the furthest into the year that the Sea Lions have remained undefeated in their overall record and concludes a record streak in the PacWest Conference.
"For a lot of the players, this hit really hard." Kiely said. "Which means the ride has been pretty good but it lights a fire, too. We are definitely getting ready for next week and excited to get back to it."
Point Loma will have a week to return to California, but will remain on the road, traveling to conference foe Azusa Pacific on Friday, November 5
th at 7:30pm.
