SAN DIEGO—Strong service kept the Point Loma Sea Lions (13-9 overall, 9-5 PacWest) aggressive from the start of a three-match sweep of the Hawai'i Pacific Sharks (4-18 overall, 3-11 PacWest) Saturday afternoon inside Golden Gymnasium.
That service led to a big day on the net for the Sea Lions as
Anna Massari had five solo blocks while
Grace Hicks added parts of four blocks to spur Point Loma's 16 on the day.
"We came out with a better intensity on the defensive side." Point Loma Head Coach
Jonathan Scott said. "When we take pride in our defense, good things tend to happen."
Point Loma jumped in front quickly scoring the first four points of the match.
Grace Hicks,
Bailey Williams, and
Claire Smith each paced the Sea Lions with three kills as Point Loma .353 in the first set to cruise to a 25-12 victory and take a one set lead.
The second set was filled with momentum swings as the teams exchanged points with Point Loma grabbing a 20-18 edge.
Williams added four more kills in the set while Smith and
Torina Hommes each had three as Point Loma went up two sets with a 25-22 win.
The Sea Lions took a five point lead in the third set, up 10-5 behind Hicks, Williams, and Smith. Rachel Schlect added a pair of kills as well as Point Loma extended the advantage to 14-8, forcing an HPU timeout.
Homes recorded a pair of kills after the timeout stationed around a Massari block. Massari added another two kills as Point Loma added to the lead at 20-10. After HPU got side out and added a point, Williams regained serve for PLNU.
Williams then setup match point from the service line, before
Lauren Phillips dropped in the final point to give the Sea Lions the 25-18 win, and the sweep three sets to zero.
Massari finished with a match high five blocks while Hicks added three.
Offensively, Smith and Williams paced the attack with nine kills each. Hommes added seven while Massari had 6.
Point Loma will now hit the road for five consecutive matches beginning November 5
th at Azusa Pacific.
