FRESNO, Calif---While it was their opponent's mascot that is known for rising from the ashes, the Point Loma Sea Lions (10-6 overall, 6-2 PacWest) overcame some bleak situations in the first two sets to sweep the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (4-14 overall, 1-7 PacWest) and the road trip to Northern California Saturday afternoon at the Special Events Center.
"We battled hard and trusted one another," Point Loma Head Coach
Jonathan Scott said after the match. "Any road trip sweep is sweet, so we're going to enjoy that."
Point Loma mounted those comebacks thanks to a season-high 15 aces and strong service throughout the afternoon.
Torina Hommes not only delivered in the clutch, but delivered throughout the afternoon, spurring the Sea Lions to close out the first set before being a constant threat with efficient attacks while registering her first nine kills without an error. Hommes finished with a match high 14 kills.
The Sea Lions edged out to a 9-6 lead in the first set, but Fresno Pacific scored 16 of the next 21 points forcing PLNU to take a pair of timeouts finding themselves down 22-14.
Point Loma cut the deficit to four at 22-18 before pulling within one behind
Bailey Williams serve at 23-22. But a service error forced set point, which was prolonged by a
Tate Duane kill. Duane staved off the second set point with an ace, tying the match at 24.
Point Loma got their first set point before FPU went off the block to tie it at 25. The Sea Lions responded right back on a kill by
Grace Hicks before the Sunbirds won a long rally to prolong the set again.
The Sunbird earned their third set point, but Hommes tied the match at 27. Hommes' delivered two powerful serves to bring Point Loma all the way back and win the set 29-27.
"Torina is training hard and it's starting to show," Scott said of his outside hitter's performance.
Point Loma found themselves down 5-1 to start the second set. But the Sea Lions charged right back into the set to tie it at 8 apiece, forcing a Fresno Pacific timeout. After trading the next two points, Point Loma closed the set on a 16-4 run, thanks in part to a massive run behind
Courtney Dyer and Jordan Moriarty's service, to close the set 25-13 and give PLNU a 2-0 lead in the match.
There was less of a need in the third set, as the Sea Lions used two runs, the first by Dyer's service after being up 13-9 that pushed the lead to 16-9. Then, with the lead at 16-11,
Lauren Phillips served the Sea Lions to a 21-11 advantage before Point Loma closed out the set and the match at 25-13.
Dyer and Phillips both led Point Loma with three service aces, while the returning Rachel Schlect added a pair of aces.
"The serving came in bunches," Scott added. "And happened (to put us in front) pretty fast."
Point Loma will return to San Diego this week in preparation for a crucial PacWest match against Azusa Pacific University Friday night at 7:00pm inside of Golden Gymnasium.
