FRESNO, Calif---A strong start from junior
Brock Mackenzie galvanized the Point Loma Sea Lions (2-0 overall) en route to a 90-73 win over Cal St. East Bay (0-2 overall) Saturday night at the Special Events Center at Fresno Pacific University.
Mackenzie led the way with a game-high 23 points and four other Sea Lions added double figures.
"It was great to see Brock get going." Point Loma Head Coach
Matt Logie said. "We wanted to come out and attack in transition and he took advantage. Helped us create the tempo we wanted to play with tonight."
Point Loma saw the lead change hands the first couple of minutes before it followed suit behind the guard with a 9-0 run four minutes into the game. From there Point Loma led for the all but 22 seconds on its way to a 2-0 start.
"We're getting better each time out." Logie said. "We've had to figure out some new roles and guys are stepping up right and left and I love where we are at right now, still with some areas that we can improve."
Hugh Baxter added a double-double with 19 points and 11 boards to complete his stellar weekend debut.
"Hugh is playing extremely well. He's giving us a great scoring punch." Logie said of his new big man. "Today, he did a great job on the glass. In the second half, he had a string of assists as well. He's just a difficult matchup."
Ben Okhotin and
Myles Franklin each had 17 with Franklin contributing 8 assists.
"I thought Myles had a great night." Logie spoke of his veteran point guard. "He just had a great night making decisions, racking up a bunch of assists and putting us in positions to succeed all game."
Point Loma was a scorching 50% from downtown, hitting 13 three's, and combined that with another stellar night at the foul line (17-19 for 89.5%).
Still, it was Mackenzie who set the tone early, with 16 of his points in the first half on an ultra-efficient 4-6 from the field. Mackenzie finished the night a perfect 7-7 from the stripe.
The only glaring area early, was the glass, where Point Loma surrendered 12 offensive rebounds.
"We didn't rebound as well on the first half as we liked. We challenged the guys and they really responded by limiting them to one offensive rebound in the second half.
Now, the Sea Lions will get their official home opener inside Golden Gym when they host the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes at 7:30pm.
