SEA LIONS DOMINATE GLASS, WIN AT CHAMINADE

HONOLULU---The balance and the depth of the Point Loma Sea Lions (6-2 overall, 2-0 PacWest) finished off their 77-60 win over the Chaminade SilverSwords (1-5 overall, 0-2 PacWest) Saturday afternoon at McCabe Gymnasium.

Point Loma's depth dominated the glass 46-24, helping to withstand a strong start from the SilverSwords and foul trouble throughout the ballgame.

The first quarter delivered a lightning quick pace as Chaminade did not miss, building a six point lead over the first four minutes.

The Sea Lions hung around thanks to excellent rebounding, including three early offensive rebounds. Annika Thayer was crucial to the Sea Lions in the early portion of the game, scoring six points and grabbing four boards in the first period alone.

The Sea Lions took twice as many shots as the SilverSwords because of the advantage on the glass, doubling Chaminade's total rebounds. But Chaminade made up for it by shooting 70% from the field in the quarter.

Point Loma closed the first period strong, with Cara Liggins knocking down a three before the end of the period to snag a 22-19 lead.

The Sea Lions started the second quarter equally strong as Liggins continued to ignite the Point Loma offense. Thayer and Ellie Turk also contributed to an 8-0 run for the Sea Lions that reached the largest lead of the first half for either team, eight points.

Chaminade pulled closer after the run, before Point Loma put the clamps on defensively and held the SilverSwords to just 26% from the field in the second quarter.

Point Loma dominated the glass in the first half, out-rebounding Chaminade 26-10 and converted 12 offensive rebounds into 13 second chance points.

The Sea Lions received points from nine different players translating to a 36-30 lead at the half.

In the second half, Point Loma navigated foul trouble with an extremely balanced and deep effort. Alix Henderson was a consistent hand scoring throughout the second half, but Point Loma weathered two players fouling out midway through the fourth by spreading out the scoring.

Four players were in double-figures and ten different players tallied at least one point as Point Loma impressed it's advantaged on the glass in the second half.

Henderson was especially potent, though, pouring in a career-high 18 points while stuffing the stat sheet with 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks and one steal.

Liggins finished with 14 points. Haylee Saurette added 11 and Thayer finished with 10 points despite fouling out midway through the fourth quarter.

The advantage on the glass equated to 15 second chance points and 32 total points in the paint.

Point Loma has won all twelve of the meetings between the two schools, winning eleven by double-digits.

The Sea Lions will hop islands, concluding the conference-opening road trip against Hawai'i Hilo on Monday at 7:00pm (PT). The Point Loma men's basketball team will return to action at 9:00pm (PT) against Hilo on Monday, as well.
