Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

#10 SEA LIONS CLOSE OUT THE SEASON UNBEATEN

IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 10 ranked Point Loma women's soccer team closed out the shortened 2020-21 season with a 2-0 win at Concordia. (Mar. 10)

Ashlee Watkins quickly put the Sea Lions in front with a goal in the sixth minute on an assist by Alana Diaz. It was Watkins' second goal of the season and Diaz's first career point. Emma Thrapp extended that lead to 2-0 with her first career goal in the 37th minute off an assist from Mara Sovde. It was also the first career point for Sovde.

It was then the defense's turn to be on center stage. The Sea Lions subbed liberally the rest of the game and everyone did their part to keep the clean sheet, PLNU's third of the season. Taylor Washington and Emma Hinson combined on the shutout with each playing a half in net. Washington led the team with three saves.

Turning Point
While the goal by Watkins gave the Sea Lions the early lead, Thrapp's goal extended Point Loma's advantage and gave them the insurance goal they need to feel confident they would be putting another mark in the win column.

Words from coach Kristi Kiely
On tonight's match: "First I want to say thank you to Concordia for being such generous hosts."

More on the match: "I was very proud of the group tonight. Obviously we've been off for two weeks and it would be reasonable for us to be sloppy and slow but I thought we started very well. It was a fun way to see the seniors off."

On the seniors: "The Seniors have finished well. They have accomplished much in their careers and they are leaving this place better. Each of them have had a unique impact on this program and will be greatly missed. So tonight, we say thank you and well done to them."

On the season: "We are so grateful to all of the people who helped to make this season possible. I think anytime you can play you benefit. We wanted to learn and grow and to send our seniors off well and I think we've done that. We've learned individually, we've learned collectively and now we have the rest of the spring to take the things we've learned and grow from there."

More on the season: "There's definitely a physical benefit to being able to play but I believe our minds and spirits might have needed it most. Playing felt very healing in what has been a very challenging year."
