LA MIRADA, Calif. – After a quiet first game by the Sea Lion offense the bats woke up in game two as the Point Loma baseball team was able to split today's (Mar. 27) doubleheader against Biola and win the weekend series.
Game one: Point Loma saw Biola take an early lead scoring four in the first inning and five more in the fourth and the deficit was too much to overcome.
Biola took advantage of a Point Loma error in the first as all four runs that came across in the first inning were unearned. The Eagles then put up five runs in the fourth inning on four hits four of which came on home runs by the Eagles. Biola would take a 9-0 lead into the fifth inning.
Point Loma looked to chip away at the Eagle lead after scoring two runs in the fifth inning.
Baxter Halligan and
Scott Anderson each singled to bring home a run. Unfortunately, Biola responded right back in their home half of the fifth pushing across three runs in response to Point Loma. The Eagles then tacked on a run in the seventh to extend their lead 13-2.
Point Loma again tried to chip away at the lead but it proved to be too big of a gap.
Brett O'Toole drove in three runs in the eighth with his first homerun of the season.
That was all PLNU was able to get in the final two innings and dropped game one of the doubleheader 13-5.
Game two: The bats of point Loma woke up in the second game as they pushed across 10 runs in seven innings, winning the game 10-2.
This time Point Loma jumped out to an early lead in the second inning. Halligan led off the inning with a double and later advanced to third on a passed ball.
Scott Anderson then singled through the left side to bring in Halligan for the first Sea Lion run. The Sea Lions proceeded to hit back-to-back singles that brought in Anderson for their second run of the inning. With one out and two on PLNU looked to add more runs in the inning. The Sea Lions were unable to as the Eagles defense held strong.
The Eagles cut the Point Loma lead in half in the third when they got one run of their own. After sitting the first two batters down to start the inning the Eagles doubled and then singled to bring home the run and cut into the Sea Lion lead.
With a 2-1 lead after three innings, Point Loma looked to respond after Biola got a run back in the bottom of the third. In the top of the fourth PLNU busted the game wide open scoring six runs. The Sea Lions got two runs on a
Scott Anderson homerun, two runs after getting runners to third and scoring on a passed ball, and two more runs on a
Baxter Halligan double to right field. Point Loma took complete control for the rest of the game.
Biola would threaten with a solo homerun in the sixth, but could not produce any more runs. The Sea Lions tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the seventh to extend their lead 10-2.
Cole Hillier would shut down the Eagle offense in the bottom half of the inning to secure the victory for Point Loma.
