SAN DIEGO – Longtime rivals met today at Carroll B. Land Stadium and the Eagles got the best of the Sea Lions winning game one 13-6 and edging PLNU in game two 3-2.
Game one: Two big innings hurt the Sea Lions' chances of winning in game one of the doubleheader. After Biola scored five runs in the second inning, Point Loma fought back to cut the lead to one, 5-4. The Eagles went on to score eight unanswered runs and won the game 13-6.
Point Loma struck first plating a run in the first inning on a
Michael Pineiro sacrifice fly. Taking a 1-0 advantage to the second, the Sea Lions lead did not last long. The first two batters of the inning would reach base before
Nathan Garkow recorded the first out, catching a bunt that was popped up to him. The next Eagle batter singled to right field, but the Point Loma fielder was unable to stop the ball and it rolled to the wall allowing Biola to score two. The Sea Lions were able to throw out the runner trying to advance to third.
PLNU intentionally walked the next hitter before Johnny Sage singled to put the Eagles back in scoring position. Biola's Jacob Portaro then brought in three runs with a home run to left-center giving Biola a 5-1 lead.
The Sea Lions were able to cut the lead to one after scoring two runs in the third and one in the fourth inning. Unfortunately, that's as close as Point Loma would get. Biola scored eight unanswered runs over the next three innings to take a 13-4 lead.
Point Loma got a short rally going in the ninth and scored two. The Sea Lions ultimately fell 13-6.
Game two: The Point Loma baseball team was haunted by walks throughout the game and ended up falling to Biola 3-2.
Point Loma bounced back early after a tough loss in game one and scored two runs in the first three innings to take a 2-0 lead over the Eagles.
Dylan Miller allowed just one hit through the first three innings of play, but Biola was able to get to him in the fourth inning. The Eagles got their first three batters on base before Rhett Stein hit a sac fly to left field and brought in a run and advanced the other two base runners. Biola then hit back-to-back singles to plate two more runs and take a 3-2 lead, but that is all they would get.
The PLNU bats were unable to spark for the final three innings and PLNU fell 3-2 in seven innings.
