Game Recap: Baseball |

BIG INNINGS HURT SEA LIONS

AZUSA, Calif. – The Point Loma baseball team dropped both games of the doubleheader against nationally-ranked Azusa Pacific by scores of 14-6 and 9-5.

Game one: PLNU and Azusa Pacific played very even for most of the game. APU was able to pull away in the eighth inning and won the game 14-6.

The Cougars struck first in a big way scoring four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Point Loma did not shy away as they cut the lead to one after their half of the fourth inning. The Sea Lions plated one run in the third inning thanks to an Easton Waterman solo home run. They followed that up next inning scoring two more runs.

Azusa Pacific got the two runs back in the bottom of the fourth inning, and after four innings lead Point Loma 6-3. The PLNU bats stayed hot as they cut the lead back to one run in the top of the fifth inning. A Michael Piniero double and an Adam Axtell groundout brought in the two runs for the Sea Lions.

Unfortunately, that is as close as PLNU would get for the rest of the game. The Cougars added eight runs over two innings (seventh and eighth) to halt the Point Loma momentum.

Point Loma scored a single run in the eighth inning on a Baxter Halligan double. The Cougars won the game 14-6.

Game two: The Azusa Pacific bats proved to be too much for the Sea Lions, as PLNU fell in game two 9-5.

The Cougars scored in five of the seven innings, with five of their nine runs coming in the second inning. APU proceeded to tack on a single run in the next four innings, after bursting for five in the second.

Point Loma had a big inning of their own in the fourth as they plated four runs to come as close as 6-4 to the Cougars. Brett O'Toole gave the Sea Lions a spark with a three-run home run. Adam Axtell brought in the fourth run for the Sea Lions with an RBI triple. A Seth Ryberg single brought in the fifth run for the Sea Lions.

PLNU was unable to come up with some magic in the late innings and fell 9-5 in game two.
