Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

SIX STRAIGHT FOR THE SEA LIONS

SAN DIEGO – It's safe to say that Point Loma volleyball has found its groove, winning six in a row to remain in a tie for first place in the PacWest following a 25-12, 25-17, 25-14 win over Dominican on Thursday in Golden Gym.

Point Loma won 20 of the last 24 points in the first set to set the tone for the entire match, which ended up being the Sea Lions' most lopsided win of the season. Tate Duane had two kills in three points to start the impressive run and the Sea Lions never looked back, posting a .385 hitting percentage for the set.

Dominican grabbed an early lead in the second set just like the first set, but again the Sea Lions came back quickly. With Courtney Dyer serving, the Sea Lions won seven points in a row as Anna Massari and Bailey Williams each recorded a block and a kill during the run. The Sea Lions never trailed again in the set, which they won 25-17.

Massari got a kill on the first point of the third set and the Penguins never were able to get into the final set. Alexis Soncrant served three aces as Point Loma raced out to a 6-0 lead. Later in the set Grace Hicks got her fifth kill of the match to earn match point. Soncrant then finished the job with her seventh kill of the evening as she went the whole match without any attack errors.

Lauren Phillips finished the match with 26 kills along with five digs and four kills on six attacks. Massari had a team-high eight kills on just 16 attacks. Two-time defending PacWest Defender of the Week Courtney Dyer had a team-high 10 digs and also contributed two aces. Torina Hommes and Soncrant each had seven kills for the match.

With the win, Point Loma improves to 7-4 overall with a 3-0 record in the PacWest. This is the Sea Lions' best start to conference play since 2018 and they will look for their first 4-0 start in the PacWest since 2014. Azusa Pacific also won in straight sets tonight against Holy Names to preserve the tie for first place atop the conference standings. Dominican is now 0-10 on the season with a 0-1 record in the PacWest.

Point Loma will next face Holy Names at 6 p.m. in Golden Gym. The Hawks are 3-8 on the season with a 0-3 record in conference. The Penguins will also play tomorrow at Azusa Pacific as the Cougars and Sea Lions continue to battle for the top spot in the PacWest. Concordia and Biola are also undefeated in conference play, but each has only played one PacWest match so far.
