FRESNO, Calif. – The PacWest season couldn't have gotten off to a better start for Point Loma, which became the first team to put three points next to their name on the PacWest standings after claiming a 3-0 win on the road against Fresno Pacific on Saturday evening.
Parker Scalzo scored the first two goals in the win and then
Lucas Purgato scored on a penalty kick as the Sea Lions improved to 3-2-1 on the season, moving to the top of the PacWest standings.
The rest of the conference will start the PacWest season next week, but the Sea Lions took advantage of an early start with an impressive offensive performance to start the conference season on the right foot.
Scalzo started the scoring in the 32
nd minute after receiving a pass from transfer
Townsend Meyer. He shot from the outside of the box into the right side of the goal and scored his third goal of the season to give the Sea Lions a 1-0 lead at halftime.
In the 62
nd minute, he shot again from a similar spot on the field, just inside the right corner of the box this time. Again, he squeezed his shot inside the right side of the net for an unassisted goal. It is Scalzo's second multi-goal game in a row and the fifth of his career at the Point.
The Sea Lions continued to create scoring opportunities and eventually earned a penalty kick in the 72
nd minute. Purgato took the kick and didn't waste the opportunity, scoring the third goal of the game. It was his first career goal in 3,588 minutes of play, most of which has been spent on the defensive half of the field.
While the final score tells a very different story, Fresno Pacific actually outshot the Sea Lions with 23 shots and nine on goal. In comparison, the Sea Lions generated 14 shots and seven of those were on goal.
Seth Ketterer was a wall for Point Loma all match, making eight saves in his second-consecutive shutout. In his last 205 minutes of work, he has made 11 saves with no goals allowed.
Point Loma will be in action again on Wednesday with a non-conference match at 6 p.m. at Concordia. Then the Sea Lions will return to their home pitch to host Academy of Art in the second PacWest match of the season. Kickoff will be at 2 p.m.
