THAYER SETS CAREER HIGH AGAIN AS SEA LIONS SWEEP HOME-STAND

SAN DIEGO---Efficiency inside facilitated by great ball movement throughout the roster helped the Point Loma Sea Lions (11-7 overall, 6-5 PacWest) trounced the Chaminade Silverswords (1-13 overall, 0-10 PacWest) 93-58 Saturday afternoon inside Golden Gymnasium.

The Sea Lions complete the 3-0 home-stand against the three Hawai'i schools and climb back over .500 in PacWest play.

"It goes back to our assists." Point Loma Head Coach Charity Elliott said. "We're just moving the ball and finding each other. It becomes contagious when everybody is giving up a shot for a better shot."

Point Loma raced out to a 12-2 advantage behind seven points from Annika Thayer.

While Thayer got going early, she forced the issue inside to earn five free-throw attempts in the first half.

Point Loma maintained the 10 point lead for much of the first quarter behind Thayer and Cara Liggins before pushing the advantage to 29-13 at the end of the period.

The Sea Lions shot 50% from the field in the opening period and managed to improve in the 2nd quarter, hitting 10 of 19 attempts, including a couple of 3's.

Thayer quickly racked up her career high, tallying her 17th and 18th points just a few minutes into the 3rd quarter.

"The team working together just opens everything up wide." Thayer said. "Its just so easy to all play together. Everyone has that great chemistry together on and off the court."

While Thayer established herself, Liggins led the Sea Lions with 14 first half point as PLNU widened the advantage to 55-33 at the break.

Ellie Turk quickly added seven points at the start of the third quarter and Thayer picked up where she left off in the first half, adding eight more points while Point Loma opened on a 17-4 run.

Izzy Turk, making her first start of the year, then added back-to-back three's as Point Loma's lead ballooned to 35.

"I think we wanted to make a statement." Izzy Turk said. "That's something we've been talking about, playing our best basketball in February and March."

Thayer finished with a career-high 21 points eclipsing her previous mark of 16 she set on Thursday. Thayer finished the night shooting 7-8 from the field and 7-11 from the stripe.

"She just plays so hard." Elliott said. "She just competes and battles for every possession. It seemed tonight that if you throw it anywhere close to her she's going to catch it and finish. Her growth this season has been tremendous. It's all because of her work ethic and mindset."

The Sea Lions again finished with an incredible 24 assists on 32 made baskets. Alix Henderson led with 6 assists while Ellie Turk added five and Kylie Hearn delivered 4.

Ellie Turk and Liggins each finished with 14 points while Madison Corder added 11 points off the bench.

93 points is the highest output of the season for the Sea Lions, topping the 90 they posted against San Diego Christian in their final game of December. The 35 point margin is their largest in a conference game this season and biggest since that game against SDCC. It's the 6th time the defense has allowed fewer than 60 points in a game this season.

Point Loma will head north for two games next week to take on Fresno Pacific on Thursday, February 3rd and Saturday, February 5th against Holy Names. The Sea Lions will be back inside Golden Gymnasium on  February 9th when they host Dominican.
